Linda Yoshida’s approach to calligraphy is rather humble. Though a prominent calligrapher (with an impressive following on Instagram), Yoshida considers herself a perpetual student, as she strives to perfect her work. “Calligraphy is a life-long learning experience,” she observed in an interview with The Pen Company.

“We need to be constantly learning and honing our skills in order for calligraphy to stay relevant, and to keep up with the changing times and client requests. I firmly believe that to be a good calligrapher, we need to study from the old masters.”

Yoshida practices what she preaches to a great extent. A member of the Society for Calligraphy guild in Southern California, and volunteer as the Lead Graphic Designer for the guild’s Calligraph journal, she has studied with master calligraphers, and to this day attends many classes and workshops in order to improve her skills.

But her love of what she calls “beautiful writing” sparked much earlier in life. Yoshida recalls being exposed to calligraphy as early as sixth grade: “My teacher had the most beautiful handwriting and taught us basic Italic Hand,” she shared. “I was so inspired by her that I would sit at my desk after finishing my homework and practice my cursive over and over.”

Since then, she has continued her affair with letterforms by studying graphic design and typography, then working as a web designer and graphic designer. Working as a graphic designer during the day, she treats calligraphy is her side job, but one she takes very seriously. Her blog and accompanying social media pages document her never-ending learning process. You’d want to join her on her quest.

Islamic calligraphy has evolved alongside Islam and the Arabic language. Based on Arabic letters, it is associated with geometric Islamic art, found on the walls and ceilings of mosques. For French-Tunisian street artist, eL Seed, Arabic calligraphy is a way of connecting with his heritage and culture. It is also a vehicle for spreading a message of peace.

His unique style incorporates Arabic calligraphy with graffiti, adding a modern twist on the ancient tradition—a style he calls “calligraffiti”.

“I’m a Middle Eastern street artist,” said eL Seed in an interview with Savoir Flair. “You always have to prove something. There are several levels of it. My point is to not get rid of that categorization; I know my roots and the roots of my art are the street, and the roots of my art are Arabic, but bringing it to a level where people don’t look at me as only this is the biggest challenge. Step by step, I am trying to work on that.”

Indeed, his work spreads a message of unity, with the aim to unify communities and break stereotypes. As such, his chosen style (not quite calligraphy art, not quite graffiti art), tackles the boundaries between high brow art and street art.

“The audience has yet to understand that the best artists could be street artists,” says eL Seed. He also stressed that street artists and artists don’t have to be separate categories.

To prove his point, eL Seed showcases his work both in exhibitions and public spaces. His projects include painting the façade of L’Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, and many other amazing works!

Calligraphy artists, graffiti artists, and type enthusiasts understand one basic truth: oftentimes, it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. Such is the striking work of Pokras Lampas. Combining calligraphy, graffiti, design, and typography, Lampas is considered a distinguished member of the “Calligraffiti” movement, spearheading a style that is known as “Calligrafuturism”.

“Calligraphy is not only about art, it is the way to pass the message,” stressed the Russian artist in an interview with Medium. “Just imagine, in hundred years people will realize that they actually need the way to communicate with each other—and to provide humankind with the lingua franca, where all the languages are evenly represented. Here we will need to find new letter shapes, because everyone would want to see their country represented in the new alphabet.”

His work reads like an artistic interpretation of this future, like an undeciphered language. According to Lampas, his calligraphy work is a combination of the different languages and letters, with the end result an uncanny representation of human speech.

“I write my thoughts on culture, technology and art are influencing the future,” explains Lampas. “The language itself is not important—but the way how people are searching for the unified language and what guides will they use to transform written languages is.”

With almost half a million followers on Instagram alone, Lampas’ futuristic language is making a splash both online and offline. Displayed in museums and galleries around the world, it has also won him some prestigious awards. Amongst them is the GQ Russia “MAN of the YEAR: NEWCOMER” award for 2019.

With lettering and calligraphy getting increasingly popular, and our days getting increasingly longer – we’re tempted to take on a new hobby. But one thing is sure, calligraphy ain’t easy. Here to guide us is Lauren Fitzmaurice. A calligraphy enthusiast and the owner of Renmade Calligraphy, Fitzmaurice stresses that the best way to find your own calligraphy style is through practice and inspiration.

A lefty calligrapher, Fitzmaurice has nurtured an online community of other aspiring and inspiring calligraphies, lefties and otherwise. Her Brit and Co class Lettering for Lefties and in-person workshops will teach you everything you need to know. But in the end – practice makes perfect.

“My favorite way to explore new styles is to pick up a pencil or brush pen and just start writing,” she stressed in an interview with Surely Simple. “Yes, there are tons of inspiring people on Instagram and it’s ok to find things that you like in others’ work, but the best way to find your own style is to put down the phone, get out the pens, and just practice until you find what you love.”

According to Fitzmaurice, being a lefty, she had to teach herself techniques on how to hold her pen. Though she admits she still has the occasional smear, she agrees practice has helped minimize lefty pangs. Take a look at some of her work in the gallery below and follow her Instagram page for more:

Today was exactly what my heart needed. I’ve been trying to smile, be strong, do what is needed, put on a happy face and do my part by making sure our family stays home. However the anxiety and worries and struggles are inevitable during this time… and I know that… and I have come to the conclusion that it is ok to feel those things. I am grateful for our health and ability to stay home and oh so thankful for those doing their part that can’t. However, I feel I am constantly reminding myself we will get through this. Today I woke up and just felt blah… I could tell the rest of my family felt the same. We did our school work and I got to see my sweet school kiddos on our video meeting, but it just wasn’t the same and I felt really sad. So I decided after our work was done that we would take a break and make other people we love and can’t see feel happy. The boys and I drew hearts and colored them and made sweet messages and then drove to my parents and grandparents houses who live nearby and surprised them by hanging our creations on their back doors and windows where they could look and and see us and the reminders that would be there that they are not alone and are so very loved. And by golly, though the anxiety and worry is still there, that blah day felt like a million bucks not only for me and my littles but for those that we love so much. So if you’re in a funk and just not feeling like this is ever going to end… do something different. Break out of the new norm of isolation (still maintaining the social distance rules of course) and be creative in letting others know you care. Today has been the best day so far and I am so grateful for every moment.💗💗💗 #100daysoflifeinletters day 3/100 . . . #renmadecalligraphy #renmadeleftyvideos #quarantinehappier #teamkentucky #togetherky #patriot #healthyathome #letsallbewell #tombowpro #acolorstory #the100dayproject #the100dayproject2020 #letteringvideos #letteringvideo

Olga Kovalenko describes herself as a big letter lover and a lettering artist who has a huge passion for calligraphy.

“It was always interesting for me to expand perceptual limits of calligraphy,” the artist shared on Bored Panda. “And one day I found myself embroidering one of my letterings. With time I got the idea to connect two beautiful arts — the fast (expressive calligraphy) and the slow one (hand embroidery). It makes you think about the deceitfulness of time.”

To create her art, from sketch to final work, she needs about 30 hours. She is currently taking on commissions and is always interested in collaborations with other artists.

“I make a theme with simple stitches — backstitch, satin stitch, and French knots,” she added.

If you are interested to see her unusual art, check out her social media accounts, Instagram and Facebook or have a look at her personal website. Don’t forget to follow the arrows for more amazing images.
