Akie Nakata is a Japanese artist who uses rocks as her canvases. Her stone-collecting journey began in her early years, when she was a little girl, however, she first started painting them back in 2011. While taking a stroll at the river bank, she saw a pebble that looked like a rabbit. According to the self-taught artist, she paints what she sees.

“To me, completing a piece of work is not about how much detail I draw, but whether I feel the life in the stone,” Nakata said in an interview with My Modern Met.

Nakata has already painted half of the animal kingdom. From cats, crocodiles, polar bears, mom and baby elephant to a family of opossum, her works are extremely lifelike. She first paints the body of the animal, and lastly, she does the eyes. When the eyes have been painted, her work is done.

Stone art is one of the oldest forms of art. Our ancestors used rocks as canvases, and in the old times, stones were the only toys children used to have fun with. Now playing with rocks, especially with pebbles and making an art out of it is called pebble stone art. Erzsébet Szilajka is a Hungarian pebble artist whose masterpieces speak for themselves.

“I’ve long been attracted to the interesting world of stones and collected them since I was little,” Erzsébet says. “Their variety, colors, and shapes always sparked my imagination. As I work, spontaneous, unplanned details become a part of the picture, so I always leave room for my imagination, emotions, and thoughts to affect the message.”
