Tattoos as an art form have come a long way. What was once shunned—associated with fringe movements and subcultures—has enjoyed a massive upsurge in popularity over the last two decades. One particular tattoo style that resurfaced this past year is black and white tattoos, and more specifically gothic tattoos. Skulls, snakes, and vermin aren’t just inked on the brave of heart, they’re considered stylish motifs that can actually grace the human body.

The beauty of black, white, and gray is that through clever manipulation a feeling of depth is created. In fact, black and white tattoos are considered more sophisticated and should definitely be on your radar.

If you’re looking for some black and white/gothic tattoo inspiration we recommend following Katy Wiedemann on Instagram. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Illustration, as well as a MA in Illustration from Edinburgh College of Art, her pieces are very much realistic and stand out for their quality and level of detail. With common themes including goth kids’ favorites such as insects and mythical beasts, it’s easy to see the appeal.

According to Wiedemann, her main inspiration comes from anatomical museums around the world. Wiedemann notes one museum in particular, in La Specola in Florence, Italy, which holds life-sized wax anatomical models, presented in centuries-old wooden cabinets.

Wiedemann’s interest in anatomy translates not only to her tattoo art, but to her illustrations in general. In fact, she’s first and foremost trained as a scientific illustrator and has even illustrated a book dedicated to human anatomy.

“I am fortunate enough to have two careers that I love, which have ultimately merged together,” Wiedemann relayed once in an interview with Female Tattooers. “I can use tattooing as the medium for my love of scientific imagery. It is such an honor—not only to be taught how to tattoo—but also having the trust of my clients who will wear my art on their bodies for the rest of their lives.”

“Usually, the most difficult part of my job in both fields is frequently being asked to draw something that has been done countless times over and try to make it unique,” she notes. Judging by the end results, she’s quite up for the challenge. Prepare to be inspired!

It’s not just you. This past year and a half have been rough on most of us, and according to statistics about four in ten adults in the US have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, up from one in ten adults who reported these symptoms from January to June 2019. But as we slowly test the water, so do we feel a surge in optimism.

“The more you feed your mind with positive thoughts, the more you can attract great things into your life,” says the cliche—and it turns out there’s actual proof to it! Research shows that people who were pessimistic had a nearly 20 percent higher risk of dying over a 30-year period than those who were optimistic.

But how to stay positive in times of adversity? One proven way is cultivating a positive environment. And with most of us being online—the term “environment” serves to include social media. We can’t stress enough how important it is to cultivate a safe space within your social media pages.

In that regard, following the right people can make all the change. Here at Every Day Monkey, we aim to serve you the most uplifting of content, so you can make some room for positivity. This week we recommend following illustrator and typography artist Taylor Weaver. An optimistic if there ever was one, Weaver’s upbeat illustrations are filled with color, texture, and an overall sense of joy. This joy also comes across her chosen messages.

“I hope that my work is uplifting, funny, and sparks fun memories in people,” said Weaver in an interview with SD Voyager. “I hope it makes them feel good.”

“I hope people look at my work and get excited about it,” she went on to say. “I hope it sparks a drive in them to create something wonderful that they love and are passionate about. I hope it is motivating to other artists and connects with people who just love to look at art too.”

Stephanie K. Clark describes her art technique as “painting with thread”. Indeed, at first glance, one might mistake her embroideries as paintings—which is exactly the effect Clark aims at.

“Visually, I love it when people bypass my work thinking it’s nothing other than a simple painting,” she admitted once in an interview with Jung Katz. “Until they look a little closer and see that in fact it is fibers/thread.”

The resemblance to paintings isn’t accidental. Having studied her undergrad in Painting and Drawing at the University of Utah, Clark’s background allowed her to explore embroidery using techniques from the worlds of drawing and painting. In fact, it was during her studies that she first experimented with thread.

“It started when I took a drawing class one semester my junior year, the professor gave us the option to work with whatever medium we wanted,” she recalls. “I wanted to take a break from painting.”

Having gotten a new sewing machine that year, Clark decided to do her drawings with thread. “Doing thread drawings then inspired embroidery and from then on I was hooked.”

These days, most of Clark’s work consists of mixing paint and thread/embroidery. Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, she has shown her work in many galleries throughout the country, continuously blurring the line between fine art and craft. “I can’t tell you how many times my art has stirred up all kinds of arguments,” she notes. “Is it a fine art or a craft? I’d like to think I’m a rebel in the art world.”

According to Clark, art is creating or arranging elements in a way that influences and affects the senses, emotions, and or intellect. “I think creating art stirs things up deep in your being and allows you to place your imagination outside your mind,” she reflects. Her art might just stir some happy emotions in you.

It took some time before Jed Sutter turned towards his life’s calling. Growing up in the fishing town of Kennebunkport, Maine, in the 1960s and 70s, both his mother and sister were artists.

“I grew up drawing, enjoying art class, and feeling artistic, but never I considered myself an artist, per se,” admitted Sutter in a piece published on Artsy Shark.

It was only much later, in his mid-50s, that Sutter would discover painting, realizing a passion that was always there. According to Sutter, once the urge struck for him to join his mother and sister, it seemed as if he’d been painting all along.

Indeed, his process seems very intuitive, with the end result often reminding him of a photo rather than a painting: “For me, seeing a scene, catching a glimpse of something and feeling the need to get it on canvas is as strong as a heartbeat,” reflected the self-taught realist painter on his website. “Into the studio I go, and go, until I glance at it and it’s right.”

Based in Boston and the Maine coast, Sutter’s paintings often take after his surroundings, an homage to his home and landscape. With people mostly absent from his work, his subjects include the urban architecture, an aging trolley that rumbles behind his home, the shores and harbors of his youth, and anything else that has caught his eye.

Having started painting in 2016, by 2017 Sutter had already applied for his first show and was invited to show for the month of July 2018 at the Newton Free Library. His accolades now include having won a Blue Ribbon in the Third Annual Gallery 334 Art Exhibition and an Award of Merit at the Copley Society of Art.

His work and life story might just inspire you to start painting.

Art and fashion are intrinsically linked. The meshing together of both mediums is rather intuitive, as the two not only celebrate visual beauty, but are also deeply rooted in self-expressionism. But for some, the connection between the two goes further than that. Case in point: Katie Rodgers’ paintings.

An homage to both fashion and nature, Rodgers’ art proves that culture and nature are the two sides of the same coin. In fact, when it comes to the artist’s inspiration, she draws both from nature (and more specifically flowers) and runway shows. This doesn’t come as a surprise when you take into account her creative background.

Growing up in Georgia, Rodgers admits to being a country girl through and through, and recalls spending time as a child exploring the family’s garden, where she would also form her own imaginative worlds. Art was also an important factor at the time, and Rodgers recalls getting her first professional set of watercolors before the age of seven.

After drawing and painting the majority of her young life, she evolved her hobby by studying Industrial Design in college. While she initially worked as an apparel designer, it wasn’t long before her watercolor paintings caught the attention of high-end designers such as Cartier, Valentino, and Swarovski.

These days, Rodgers is based between New York City and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is often commissioned by designers to illustrate their designs to give them a more natural, flowing look. “It’s a challenge I enjoy to create something that speaks my style and vision, but also speaks for the brand’s vision,” she admitted in an interview with Impakter, where she shared her unique experience as a fashion illustrator. “There’s a fine line between too little creative direction and too much. It can be tricky!” she noted.

“My work has evolved over the years, but the figures within my work are often a bit abstract,” she she further shared. “I try to keep them as simple as possible. I believe there’s something interesting where my viewer can look at my work and fill in the details in their own way.”

Cute things oftentimes come in small packages. Case in point: Cedric the Chihuahua. “I’m an extremely tiny dog with just one tooth and a big loving heart”, reads the bio on an Instagram page—an Instagram which is growing in momentum by the moment. Indeed, with almost 80k fans to date, Cedric proves you don’t have to be large in order for you to be in charge.

Being tiny, as it turns out, is actually Cedric’s selling point. Most photos and videos show him standing against other items, comparing sizes. In a video comparing him to different-sized fruit, Cedric can be seen towering over a mango (but only by a bit). Alas, in another video (an Easter special), Cedric seems quite small compared to a giant Kinder egg.

It’s this kind of funny/heart warming content that shot Cedric to fame. But according to his owner, life wasn’t so easy on the tiny Instagram star.

“I was the last puppy left in the litter that no one wanted, because I have a severe overbite,” admitted Cedric in a mock interview with Dog Whisperer HQ. “My humans knew my biological father and that’s how they learned about me. They had been wanting a small dog that they could easily travel with.”

“When they first saw me in person, they were surprised,” adds the pooch. “I had seemed much bigger in the photos and videos. They were terrified that they would accidentally step on me or hurt me. We got to know each other over a few weeks and they stopped worrying as they saw I was very smart and careful.”

Back in Montreal, Cedric soon gained the following he deserved. You might as well join his growing fanbase…

Gosia Herba is the kind of illustrator your favorite illustrator idolizes. An illustrator and author of children’s books and graphic novels, Herba also works for various publishers, magazines, music labels, and ad agencies, with selected clients like The Washington Post, The World Today, Vanity Fair, and Nature to name a few.

Based in Poland, Herba has attended the National School of Fine Arts in Wrocław and received a diploma in jewelry-making. She later studied Art History at university, zooming in on the history of illustration.

“My studies in art history left me with huge personal art gallery in my head,” she admitted once in an interview with Eye on Design Magazine. “I really appreciate Gothic painting and sacral sculpture, Japanese print art as well as paintings by Balthus, and works by Polish painters Witold Wojtkiewicz and Wojciech Weiss.”

Her work, which includes painting, drawing, graphic designer, and comics, also has traces of Picasso and Matisse. The key to her practice: experimentation. According to Herba, she prefers analog techniques but relies on her computer for the finished product. Her mediums include gouache paint (a favorite of Herba’s), ink, and paper cutouts, but also a graphic tablet.

“Experiments with media are an important stage of my work process,” she explains. “Each technique influences the style and character of the image. My favorite medium is gouache paint. I like its velvet-like color. I also use ink, paper cut-outs, and Ecoline. When working on an illustration for magazines, I often use a graphic tablet.”

Her style, while varied, is very expressive and geometric, often relying on a strong color palette. Follow her Instagram page to see some more of her projects!

There’s something rather exquisite about the creative process that takes place when creating paper art: a transformative quality that takes shape when a humble piece of paper is folded, laser-cut, layered, and glued. Starting with origami and evolving over the centuries, the unique artform sees paper less of a canvas and more as a medium in and of itself.

And much like other forms of creativity, when it comes to paper art—no two artists are the same. Art duo Adrian Woods and Gidi van Maarseveen, aka Adrian & Gidi, take a more sculptural approach when it comes to paper. Based in Amsterdam, their commercial work includes fields like craft, design, and animation, with brands like ELLE, Vogue, Clinique, and Adobe, giving them a stamp of approval.

“Every project has its own challenges,” the two admitted in an interview with Medium. “When we are working with unfamiliar materials, and tight deadlines it can be challenging to get good results in limited time. But till now, we have seemed to manage.”

The two not only share a studio together but also a home. Having met at the Royal Academy of Arts, they’ve joined creative forces ever since. “We studied together, and helped each other with our art projects,” they further explained. “Our working together during the study blossomed into a relationship, which grew into a working collaboration. So actually, in a way, we have been working together since we met.”

Recent projects include a commercial for the Gucci Bloom perfume and a campaign shot for L’Occitane. But according to the creative duo, inspiration mostly comes from the banalities of everyday life. “Design wise we get a lot of inspiration from our daily lives,” they note. “For instance, when working on miniature architecture we get a lot of inspiration from the old buildings here in Amsterdam. You notice all the little details, and everything around you turns into miniature sets in your head.”

Yevgenia Watts’ watercolor paintings are a candid, intimate reflection of her day-to-day: “Art is the way I respond to life,” she reflected once in an interview with Jung Katz. It’s also a way for her to relax and share what she sees with others. “It is not, to me, a vehicle for social change or political statements,” she stressed.

For Watts, art—and specifically watercolor painting—is also a form of language, and one she speaks fluently. Born and raised in the Ukraine, beginning at the early age of 9, she attended multiple art classes and by 1996, she graduated from the Khmelnitsky Visual Arts School. Having moved with her family to the US, she pursued an education in architecture, receiving her B.A. degree from UC Berkeley in 2007, before finding her voice through watercolor painting.

“I think my desire and appreciation of beauty comes from growing up in the former USSR,” admits Watts. “Where traditional visual arts were respected and supported. Same goes for my love of old architecture: you can’t help but learn to love it when you are surrounded by it.”

An echo of Watts’ Ukraine origins (where she studied classical and European artistic traditions), still remains in her work today. Now based in Sacramento, CA, she devotes her time to painting in watercolor and exploring different art techniques. Her artwork can be found in private and public collections around the world, from New York to Paris.

According to Watts, her inspiration is varies and includes anything from light and shadow, strong color contrasts, and a foggy landscape that perfectly reflects her mood. Show her some love by following her on Instagram.

Helena Pallarés’ art sits at a crossroad between illustration and collage. “My work is somewhere in between illustration and collage and it can be both at the same time,” relayed the Spanish-born, Paris-based artist in an interview with Art Week.

Much like her chosen medium, her techniques are diverse and include digital and handmade collage work, or a mix of collage and drawing. Pallarés enjoys cutting various materials out and overlapping them, with the end result both graphic and minimal (unlike other collage artists, Pallarés’ collages aren’t excessive in nature).

“I think that my handmade works can be considered as illustrations from an esthetical point of view,” she explains. “They are close to this field because of the final result and compositions but I also like to see them as collages themselves, independent works made with a technique that is not really usually related to illustration, even though it has recently started to gain ground.”

Often time, her collage pieces add up to reveal a face. Using cuttings of papers to complete the portrait, features like eyes, nose, and mouth are added to a colorful background. Her collage portraits often feature icons in pop culture, with nods to giants like Brigitte Bardot and David Bowie.

According to Pallarés, her work is inspired by Dadaism and Surrealism (mentioning artists like René Magritte and photographer Man Ray). “I’ve always been interested in the Dadaism and Surrealism since I came across some photomontage artists when I was at the university,” she relayed. “I think these movements had a lot of influence on me, not only like an artist, but also as a way of learning how to observe and perceive art in general.”
