We’re finally watching the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games that were postponed last summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the event is just as magnificent as expected. To celebrate the occasion, miniature artist Tatsuya Tanaka recreated typical sports scenes using figurines and face masks.

Tanaka has been a miniature artist for nearly a decade. He typically uses common household objects and this time, his focus was on face masks that have become necessary over the past year.

“Broccoli and parsley may sometimes look like a forest of trees, and tree leaves floating on the surface of water may sometimes look like little boats. Everyday occurrences seen from a miniature perspective can bring us lots of fun thoughts,” the artist writes on his website. We’re impressed by his creativity and the way he sees the world.

When laid down flat, face masks resemble swimming pools and running lanes, which Tanaka cleverly used to achieve amazing effect with as few objects as possible.

Definitely check out his Instagram account (with 3 million followers) to see more of his previous and future work. It will inspire you to see the world from a different perspective and perhaps have fun doing something similar.

Andy Kehoe is an artist who creates fantastical digital paintings that drag in the viewer. The worlds he creates are filled with “human-animal hybrids and spirit creatures,” as he calls them. The artist describes himself in a whimsical way on Instagram, saying that he was “raised by Galapagos iguanas, once a forest demon betrayed by villagers, former horse brigand, shamed stuntman. Now an artist trying to recall it all.”

Kehoe finds inspiration in Romanticism, the art movement from the 19th century that relied on emotion and drama a lot. His works create a similar vibe. “With a focus on imagination and emotional response as the source of aesthetic experience, my fantastical imagery evokes a sense of wonderment by emphasizing the mystery and grandeur of nature and the cosmos,” the artist tells My Modern Met.

Kehoe’s paintings are full of interesting details. Each of them tells a unique story and they all share the mutual theme of supernatural lore. The artist makes one painting per month for his Patreon. He sells prints and original art in an online store, and you can buy his gorgeous prints for around $80.

Check out some of his beautiful digital paintings below and follow him on Instagram for more.

City lights have always been an inspiration for photographers, and Osaka, Japan is one of the most inspiring cities in that sense. With many little stores and plenty of neon signs around the city, Osaka serves as an inspiration for Omi Kim, the local photographer who created these surreal artworks.

Kim specializes in street photography, graphic composites, and portraiture. “For over ten years I took part in design and production of my fathers leather company,” Kim writes on his website. “In 2010 I established my own brand ‘crambox creating’. I started photography to showcase my creations but soon photography also became a big part of myself.”

He finds that there are limitless ways to express this world through photography. Nearly 50k people follow his work on Instagram, where he shares some of the most beautiful photos he took.

He often uses Photoshop to erase the background and leave the single building in focus. He often plays with photo manipulation to make the images surreal by adding unexpected characters.

Scroll down to see some of Kim’s photos and follow his Instagram for more. You can check out his full portfolio on his website. Don’t forget to also check out his work with leather behind the brand crambox!
