Catherine O’Hara, renowned for her role as Kate McCallister in the 1990 holiday classic Home Alone, shared her difficulty delivering a particular line to then-child actor Macaulay Culkin. O’Hara disclosed this during a speech at Culkin’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in December 2023.

The Pivotal Scene

Reflecting on a pivotal scene, O’Hara recounted the moment her character reprimands her son, Kevin McCallister, portrayed by Culkin, by sending him to sleep in the attic after a family dispute. In the dispute, she says she doesn’t want to see him “for the rest of the night”, and Kevin replies: “I don’t want to see you again for the rest of my life, and I don’t want to see anybody else, either.”

“I hope you don’t mean that – you’d feel pretty sad if you woke up tomorrow morning and you didn’t have a family,” she replies.

O’Hara admitted that delivering such a line to a young child was challenging. “The scene where I had to drag him upstairs to sleep in the attic ‘cause he’d misbehaved, he’s mouthing off about the family and I say, ‘Well, you’d be pretty sad if you woke up tomorrow morning and you had no family,’ and he says, ‘No, I wouldn’t.’ And I was supposed to say, ‘Then say it again – maybe it’ll happen.’

“I can’t tell you how much that killed me – I could not wrap my head around saying something so horrific to this beautiful child. Of course I was not yet a mother at the time and I had no idea the kind of things would come out of my own mouth with my own two sons,” she continued, as The Independent reported.

Praising Culkin’s Performance

During her speech, O’Hara praised Culkin’s performance, attributing the enduring success of Home Alone to his portrayal of Kevin McCallister. She noted that families worldwide continue to cherish the film annually, largely due to Culkin’s “perfect performance as Kevin McCallister that gave us that little every boy on an extraordinary adventure.”

Home Alone, directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes, remains a beloved holiday film, celebrated for its humor, heartwarming narrative, and memorable performances. O’Hara’s reflection offers fans a deeper appreciation of the actors’ experiences during the making of the film and the challenges they faced in bringing the story to life.

Culkin, who was 10 years old during the filming, became an international sensation following the movie’s release. O’Hara acknowledged the pressures of such early fame, commending Culkin for maintaining his sense of humor and intelligence throughout his career. She stated, “It’s a sign of intelligence in a child and a key to surviving life at any age.”

The reunion of O’Hara and Culkin at the Walk of Fame ceremony not only celebrated Culkin’s achievements but also highlighted the lasting bonds formed during the production of Home Alone. Their reflections serve as a testament to the film’s impact on their lives and its enduring legacy in popular culture.
