Claire Marie Saves Old Surfboards By Turning Them Into Art

Surfboards are known to be durable and provide their owner with years of surfing fun. But there comes a time when they become too old and worn out to serve their purpose. When that happens, some end up in the trash, others get recycled, but the few lucky ones get turned into an artwork by Western Australia-based artist Claire Marie.

Marie is on a mission of saving old surfboards from being discarded by giving them a new purpose. She uses them as a canvas on which she paints beautiful landscapes and ocean-teamed art.

Each of the pieces Marie creates is hand-painted. Some of the works are the result of her inspirations, while others are commissioned, in which case she looks to make it personal and unique according to the client’s wishes. She also includes a handwritten message that reveals the story of the board and the artwork.

“The surfboard itself holds its own memories from the time it has spent out in the waves,” Marie says. “So by commissioning an up-cycled surfboard, you are not only saving these boards and giving them a second life, but you are enabling these memories to live on!”
