Najla’a Abdallah is a talented Australian-Jordanian multidisciplinary designer with a passion for 3D art. Although she never wanted to work as a product designer, here she is doing exactly that and loving it!

Browsing through her Instagram account, you can enjoy extraordinary 3D artwork, which can easily be mistaken as photographs. And she achieves these effects by “mixing playful forms rendered in elegant and sophisticated tones”.

Being a product designer, Abdallah was never involved with modeling. However, when everything stopped due to the pandemic, she found time to dedicate time to 3D art, and she fell in love.

“With physical products, I am forced to consider every dimension and every technical aspect of every single detail, but with 3D art, I am free to do whatever I want. That’s something that I thoroughly enjoy, as it gives me the freedom to express my ideas and feelings freely,” she said in an interview for Ballpit.

When creating her arts, she seeks inspiration from everything that could trigger a new idea, such as TV shows, movies, and social media. She also says that a lot of inspiration came from Peter Tarka’s artwork, which eventually pushed her to start her 3D art journey.

Netherlands-based illustrator Sonal Jadhav produces anything from editorial work to advertising campaigns, collaborating with brands like Microsoft Build, FOUR magazine, and British Petroleum. When it comes to her medium of choice, Jadhav admits she’s “digital all the way”. In an interview with Ballpitmag she described this medium as “very forgiving”, declaring “it gives me the freedom to experiment constantly.”

Indeed, one thing is clear when scrolling through Jadhav’s Instagram page: her playful inclination for experimentation. After years of playing around with different aesthetics, she found that her best work happens when she’s creating surreal spaces. Inspired by photography, architecture, modern art, and textiles, she uses characters, forms, and textures that add a tactile quality to her finished pieces.

Born in India, Jadhav grew up in the bustling city of Mumbai, recalling her childhood as filled with creativity. According to Jadhav, growing up in India also meant she was surrounded by its colorful culture, which would later inspire her work. After attending Supinfocom Rubika for her master’s in 3D Direction, she decided to work at an indie game studio in the Netherlands, and has lived there since 2016.

Now based in Enschede, she also runs an online shop that offers postcards and art prints. A multi-disciplined illustrator, Jadhav’s aim is to deliver imagery that surpasses the brief, satisfying both herself and her audience. “I live to create illustrations that are pleasing to the senses,” she writes.

Mathew Borrett’s Instagram tagline reads “Lost time traveler”, which has a truth to it. Based in Toronto, Canada, Borrett works in the visual effects industry for both TV and film, and shares his digital illustrations online. His artwork presents a detached urban landscape for an imagined future or imagined past.

“I often draw spaces that you might want to hide in or hide from, or where outside and inside our blurred,” Borrett shared in an interview with Indigits. “Protective walls are breached.”

Devoid of human presence, his illustrations provide the perfect backdrop for a sci-fi movie or video game. “I create spaces for the viewer to explore and respond to however they will,” says Borrett, “so in that sense the interpretation is open and free.”

His landscapes include a digital rendering of Toronto which he calls a “Hypnagogic City”, explaining that “Hypnagogia” is the experience of the transitional state from wakefulness to sleep. In it, the city’s civic center is presented in a seemingly parallel universe. Taking a maximalist approach, the viewer is presented with a hyper-detailed scene that invites repeated exploration.

Born in rural Ontario, Borrett admits to being inspired by the natural world. “The natural world inspires me most,” says Borrett, “the way it resovles into infinite detail in both directions, if you have the eyes or instruments to look closely enough.”

Brooklyn-based artist Dan Perkins uses tight looping geometries to create abstract imagery that appears to be digitally created but is in fact painted. His careful use of paint and color also allows him to play with the depth of the image, creating a landscape that is at once flat and 3D.

“I think in many ways this is one of painting’s essential paradoxes: A flat surface that depicts depth,” he observed in an interview with Art Maze Magazine. “Reflecting on that idea gives me the space to experiment and play with composition in a way I find visually engaging and perceptually challenging. In another sense, I am interested in creating a paradoxical whole. Something that claims to represent and encapsulate the entirety of an experience, while being a figment or mirage. In some ways, my interest in Mobius-like forms comes from exploring this thought.”

Color is also important in the creation of these illusions and is often the starting point of Perkins’ paintings. “I have a catalog of images and sources that I use as a source for color relationships in my paintings,” he notes. “I find referring to something outside of myself really helpful for understanding and making color decisions.”

His catalog is composed of personal photos, photos of others, and photos from old magazines. The images and sources all depict or reference the natural world in some way. From these, Perkins distills and edit moments of color down into unified fields. Starting with images of the natural world as initial source material, Perkins edits, crops, cuts and rearranges these sources until an image emerges.

“In terms of working digitally, much of my work with color is first sketched out in photoshop in terms of general color relationships, however all drawing, masking, cutting, and painting is done by hand,” he stresses.
