When Joshua Barkman decided to spread his wings as an artist, he opted for quite an interesting subject to explore through his illustrations. The mastermind behind False Knees invites you to fly into a realm where you can find birds at every corner—and they’re ready to ruffle some feathers.

Barkman has been passionate about comics for a long time, and he initially started drawing them while working for a university newspaper. His passion for photography and videography helped him polish his story-telling skills, but his love for drawing eventually carried him forward and kept growing as the years went by.

We’ve seen Barkman explore many different subjects since starting his Instagram page False Knees, which is now followed by over 700,000 people. The days of drawing humans are now long behind him, and he mostly focuses on the natural world, shifting our perspective about certain animals and showing them in a hilarious new light, starting with birds.

“Animals are way more fun to draw than me! It also gives me a chance to play on people’s expectations of common North American city animals. We share our space with these creatures who go largely forgotten, and I like the idea of giving them a voice,” he told Go Comics.

Birds have been fascinating artists for centuries, as an eternal symbol of freedom and escapism. Many artists have tried to capture their beauty through their work, and Paulina Bartnik is certainly succeeding, using nothing but needle and thread to get things done.

Bartnik is a multidisciplinary artist from Poland, who graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. She’s interested in everything from graphics and painting to embroidery, and she often puts birds front and center in her work.

Her fascination with embroidery started when she found a book about Polish folk embroidery as a teenager. She decided to train herself to stitch together similar patterns, and it came naturally to her because she had a background in other fields of art, but she eventually abandoned embroidery and only returned to it when she was older.

Most of Bartnik’s art these days is inspired by birds because she finds them special and fascinating. She enjoys exploring their beauty through her art, and she usually cuts bird shapes from felt sheets before embordering them to make sure they’re as life-like as possible.

“I chose birds because of the beautiful colors, shapes, and texture of feathers. To embroider them, I mainly use the needle painting technique, which I think perfectly imitates bird feathers,” the artist told My Modern Met.

“In order to see birds,” writes Robert Wilson Lynd, “it is necessary to become a part of the silence.” And if that’s the case, then Australian contemporary artist, Victoria Velozo, has found a way to blend in with silence.

Her paintings, most commonly featuring birds, pay homage to the avian creatures. The end result—bold, vibrant, and powerful—is anything but silent, calling attention to the importance these tiny winged animals have in the grand scheme of things.

Each of Velozo’s paintings features different types of birds, that provide the focal point of the piece. “Other than the realistic feature, I try not to have too much of a developed, preconceived idea of what I want the painting to look like when I begin,” relayed the artist in an interview with Artsy Shark.

Indeed, while the birds themselves are highly realistic and very much animated, the rest of the painting is fairly abstract, providing an emotional context to the final piece. Velozo explains that she, in fact, begins with these abstract backgrounds, building the piece from there.

“When beginning a new work, I create the backgrounds first,” she stressed. “They represent an abstract version of an environmental landscape in which the featured animal will be placed.” Using water and sponges, as well as collage techniques that include layering, Velozo’s intention is that the background will add movement and depth to the painting, highlighting its chosen subjects.

Take a look at some of her eye-popping pieces and be sure to follow her on Instagram for more.

When it comes to the bird population, the future looks dire. Scientists estimate that two-thirds of North American bird species are at risk of extinction due to climate change. One research shows that bird populations have plummeted in the past five decades, dropping by nearly three billion across North America—an overall decline of 29 percent from 1970.

The data is overwhelming and it’s hard to grasp what it is exactly we stand to lose. In such cases, a picture might indeed be worth a thousand words. Canadian artist Rose Tanner helps bridge to gap between research and empathy. Using traditional oil painting techniques, she captures the unique behavior of birds, be it flying or nesting.

These oil paintings also include endangered birds, as Tanner explains on her website: “Endangered birds are a gauge to the health of our environment. By protecting the endangered we reassess our environment and our actions to come up with solutions for the species survival. It leads to growth, education, community and improves the environment, wouldn’t you say these are all great reasons to protect the endangered?”

Recent paintings include a blue-winged Warbler, Magpies, and Piping Plovers. Tanner herself is an avid bird watcher, with her work oftentimes relying on her personal observations. “One time I traveled 12,000 kilometers for a species,” she told Artsy Shark. “With a long lens, I have witnessed extraordinary behavior that inspires me deeply,” she notes.

Documenting birds is one way of ensuring we understand better the cost of their extinction. Awareness is key. Still, at least by some measures, not all is lost. A recent study shows that global conservation action has reduced the effective extinction rate of birds by an astonishing 40%.

For Claire Brewster, inspiration can be found everywhere, even in old maps. Using vintage ephemera—books, magazines, and plenty of old maps and atlases—she creates intricate collages and cut-out sculptures. Her paper cut art, more often than not, takes after the natural world, mainly birds. Flora and fauna leap out of the unused map, adding a new layer of meaning to the once discarded paper.

According to Brewster, each piece is the result of much study, and more importantly, observation. “It always starts with looking,” she told ARTIQ. “When I’m going to start a new project, I do research either on the internet, books, or going to museums, I don’t always know what I’m looking for until I find it.”

Brewster notes that she very much enjoys the research that goes behind each piece. After the initial research, comes the drawing stage. “I then start drawing and spend a lot of time drawing and at the same time I go through my map collection and see if anything inspires me or I start looking for new maps and then once I’ve finished drawing I make a template of the piece and start cutting,” she elaborates.

Working with her material, rather than against it, Brewster admits that she mostly doesn’t know where and how a piece will take her until she’s actually cut it. “I have a picture in my head but that often changes when I have the pieces cut,” says the London-based artist. Once she’s done with the cutting, she pins the pieces and frames the finished product.

With experience of over 20 years, Brewster’s work has been exhibited widely, from Manchester Art Gallery to Sydney, Australia. It has also been published in many esteemed publications such as Vogue, World of Interiors, Marie-Claire Maison, and Paper. But you can also follow her work online, via Instagram.

Rosemary Mosco is an award-winning science communicator, writer, and cartoonist, who loves animals so deeply that she decided to illustrate them. That’s how Bird and Moon were born.

Spending her childhood in Ottawa, Canada, the artist lived by nature, which led her to become a science and nature art adorer since her earliest years. While spending her free time hiking with her mom, she absorbed every inch of nature and then tried to transfer her impressions onto paper. However, there was one thing that stood out: birds.

“There’s so much to love about birds. I adore that they’re real-life, modern dinosaurs! As an artist, I’m captivated by their color variations,” Mosco told Birds and Blooms in an interview. She later added that once you get interested in birds, you won’t be bored ever again.

But besides birds, the artist loves other creatures as well. For example, if you take a look at her Instagram profile, you will notice that insects, ferns, and salamanders capture her attention as well.

She currently has more than 10,000 followers, and if you are fond of birds like Mosco is, you should check out her social media platforms. There you will see colorful illustrations of different kinds of birds and expand your knowledge of them!

Birds are some of the most iconic sources of inspiration for artists of all shapes and forms. Animal-loving creatives (from poets to painters) often turn to these winged creatures for inspiration and aren’t disappointed. Their aesthetic diversity, distinctive silhouettes, and graceful movements make them an ideal muse.

Nicola Henley knows best. Based in the West of Ireland, her art is in constant dialogue with birds, and more specifically—birds in flight. Inspired by the dramatic seas and changing light of the Atlantic coast, as well as the sense of freedom of birds, Henley’s work is representative of the striking contrast between intricate ornithological detail and the vast expanse of surrounding space.

“Birds are often a focal point but within every environment,” she relayed once in an interview with Textile Artist. According to Henley, she seeks out the colour and dynamics in terms of movement within space. “I draw to record what I see but also to try to capture the essence of the place and bird character and movement within a location, bringing out what is important to me,” she notes.

Using a combination of dying, painting with pigments, screen-printing onto cotton calico, and texturing made of hand and machine stitch, her stand-alone pieces make for a striking statement. The end result, rather than being realistic, provides an impression of the movement of birds as they soar high above us.
