Craig Black has come to be recognized for his bespoke typographic illustrations and lettering. Sprawled across walls, massive installations, or packages, Black’s work is both engaging and original, attracting an impressive clientele. His more personal projects have also been exhibited worldwide—from London and New York to Sydney and Dubai.

But oddly enough, his introduction to design and typography wasn’t as straightforward as his work would have you believe. In fact, long before he became an independent designer, the Scottish-born creative worked in a different field altogether – playing professional soccer. “When I was growing up, football was all I thought about,” he recalled in an interview with Typeroom, “but simultaneously I spent my time drawing football boots, strips, badges, etc. so without realizing, I was already working on my true passion.”

According to Black, it was only years later, that he decided on a career change and studied design at The University West of Scotland. “Thereafter, I was hooked on design and through a lot of hard work, continually challenging my abilities and not being afraid to fail has led me to where I am today,” he notes.

These days, Black’s strengths lie in his ability to cross disciplines without the restriction of a fixed personal style. This versatility has offered him the opportunity to work on a varied mix of collaborations with local and international clients of all business backgrounds. But though his clients are versatile, his work process tends to be the same, beginning with a heavy amount of research.

“I always start by thoroughly researching the brief, leading to mood boards to get the ideas flowing,” sats Black, describing his creative process. “As the mind ticks, I start to sketch a lot of ideas down and then narrow it down to more successful routes. When a concept is decided, I then take it to final stages whether thats by hand or digital depending on the specifics of the project for final completion.”

With lettering and calligraphy getting increasingly popular, and our days getting increasingly longer – we’re tempted to take on a new hobby. But one thing is sure, calligraphy ain’t easy. Here to guide us is Lauren Fitzmaurice. A calligraphy enthusiast and the owner of Renmade Calligraphy, Fitzmaurice stresses that the best way to find your own calligraphy style is through practice and inspiration.

A lefty calligrapher, Fitzmaurice has nurtured an online community of other aspiring and inspiring calligraphies, lefties and otherwise. Her Brit and Co class Lettering for Lefties and in-person workshops will teach you everything you need to know. But in the end – practice makes perfect.

“My favorite way to explore new styles is to pick up a pencil or brush pen and just start writing,” she stressed in an interview with Surely Simple. “Yes, there are tons of inspiring people on Instagram and it’s ok to find things that you like in others’ work, but the best way to find your own style is to put down the phone, get out the pens, and just practice until you find what you love.”

According to Fitzmaurice, being a lefty, she had to teach herself techniques on how to hold her pen. Though she admits she still has the occasional smear, she agrees practice has helped minimize lefty pangs. Take a look at some of her work in the gallery below and follow her Instagram page for more:

Today was exactly what my heart needed. I’ve been trying to smile, be strong, do what is needed, put on a happy face and do my part by making sure our family stays home. However the anxiety and worries and struggles are inevitable during this time… and I know that… and I have come to the conclusion that it is ok to feel those things. I am grateful for our health and ability to stay home and oh so thankful for those doing their part that can’t. However, I feel I am constantly reminding myself we will get through this. Today I woke up and just felt blah… I could tell the rest of my family felt the same. We did our school work and I got to see my sweet school kiddos on our video meeting, but it just wasn’t the same and I felt really sad. So I decided after our work was done that we would take a break and make other people we love and can’t see feel happy. The boys and I drew hearts and colored them and made sweet messages and then drove to my parents and grandparents houses who live nearby and surprised them by hanging our creations on their back doors and windows where they could look and and see us and the reminders that would be there that they are not alone and are so very loved. And by golly, though the anxiety and worry is still there, that blah day felt like a million bucks not only for me and my littles but for those that we love so much. So if you’re in a funk and just not feeling like this is ever going to end… do something different. Break out of the new norm of isolation (still maintaining the social distance rules of course) and be creative in letting others know you care. Today has been the best day so far and I am so grateful for every moment.💗💗💗 #100daysoflifeinletters day 3/100 . . . #renmadecalligraphy #renmadeleftyvideos #quarantinehappier #teamkentucky #togetherky #patriot #healthyathome #letsallbewell #tombowpro #acolorstory #the100dayproject #the100dayproject2020 #letteringvideos #letteringvideo

Menw Hurkens’ Instagram page is a shrine for paper ephemera, featuring a rich variety of labels, tags, stickers, and stamps among other odds and ends. Those are also sold on Hurkens Etsy store, Rippels Paperhugger, inviting others to join in on the joyful practice of journaling and letter writing.

“Some of my favorite things to do is decorating envelopes, making flipbooks and collages and write letters,” relayed Hurkens in an interview with Surely Simple. “I seriously get happy by unpacking mail and discover a little bit of the world from the person behind it and the generosity is amazing amongst this community on Instagram!”

Based in Maastricht, the Netherlands, some of her more viral Instagram posts include short videos of her handmade wax seals which (and you’ll have to trust us on this) are simply delightful. All aimed at inspiring your inner crafter to get to work.

According to Hurkens, her love for crafting is tied with her childhood. She recalls being fascinated by the desk of her father. “I couldn’t get enough of the pens you had to refill with ink, the enormous rulers and drawings with all these lines on it,” she says. “It felt like a trip to wonderland when I went to my father’s office and I could take a glimpse at his desk.”

Now that she has her own desk, she enjoys spreading the love for paper around the globe. Show her some love on Instagram.

Olga Kovalenko describes herself as a big letter lover and a lettering artist who has a huge passion for calligraphy.

“It was always interesting for me to expand perceptual limits of calligraphy,” the artist shared on Bored Panda. “And one day I found myself embroidering one of my letterings. With time I got the idea to connect two beautiful arts — the fast (expressive calligraphy) and the slow one (hand embroidery). It makes you think about the deceitfulness of time.”

To create her art, from sketch to final work, she needs about 30 hours. She is currently taking on commissions and is always interested in collaborations with other artists.

“I make a theme with simple stitches — backstitch, satin stitch, and French knots,” she added.

If you are interested to see her unusual art, check out her social media accounts, Instagram and Facebook or have a look at her personal website. Don’t forget to follow the arrows for more amazing images.
