Paper artist Nayan Shrimali recently presented a new series of paper artworks titled “Rare”. In the series, Shrimali focuses on animals that have rare genetic mutations of albinism and melanism.

According to Shrimali, his goal was to showcase the beauty of these animals and encourage people to appreciate rare and unusual occurrences in the natural world.

“This collection of artworks showcases the grace of birds and other wild beings with this peculiar genetic trait,” the artist shares on his website.

Describing his creative process, Shrimali shares that each of the pieces starts out as a sketch. After that, the artist meticulously cuts the paper to form the feathers/fur of the animal featured in the work.

Next, the elements of the paper artwork are colored using watercolors to match the exact shade of their live counterparts. Finally, the pieces are assembled by hand to form an impressive piece of art.

There are 25 animals with albinism and melanism that found their place in Shrimali’s “Rare” series. The list includes white tigers, albino harvest mice, albino porcupines, melanistic leopards, white lions, and more.

Patrick Cabral’s goal with his paper art is simple: to take your breath away. “I’m just trying to capture awe,” he relayed once in an interview with spot.ph. “To make your brain freeze and say, ‘This is not possible.’” Indeed, scrolling through his work, you can’t help but be amazed by the amount of thought and level of detail that goes into each and every one of his pieces.

Cutting and layering piece by piece, Cabral’s work pays homage to the intricate beauty that is the natural world. Most of his paper art is dedicated specifically to the animal kingdom, with one of his more epic series documenting endangered species of animals. According to Cabral, half of his sculpture sales from this series were donated to the WWF-Philippines (World Wildlife Fund Philippines).

“My art can help educate the younger generation about the plight of these species,” stressed the Manila-based artist. “I want everyone to go beyond social media and contribute their time and presence to causes that are important to them.”

One of the most challenging pieces he made is a paper octopus, which was created using some 900 individual layers of paper. According to Cabral, this one piece took him around three months of work, from planning to execution. Another incredible piece is a papercut rendition of a rhino, inspired by a woodcut by Albrecht Durer from 1515.

According to Cabral, we may still have a chance to correct our past mistakes regarding the environment, but time is running fast. Hopefully, his art can raise awareness to this greater cause.

Aside from their distinct paper likeness, Calvin Nicholls’ sculpted animals look incredibly realistic. So much so, that features like feathers and fur seem soft to the touch. Sticking exclusively to sheets of white, plain, A4 paper, Nicholls manages to bring to life majestic animals like owls, lions, and even bears.

To do so requires much time and much patience, each sculpture beginning with a drawn pattern, which he traces and transfers to sculpture paper. He then cuts each one with a scalpel or X-acto knife on a cutting mat, using very small amounts of glue to assemble the figure piece by piece. Most all of Nicholls work is white on white, allowing the viewer to better appreciate the sheer amount of detail.

“The cuts and texture are often tiny and very delicate but due to the numerous glue joints for every piece, the overall strength is substantial,” he stressed on his website, explaining that the finished product isn’t as fragile as it seems. “Tests of the bond between glue and paper reveal that when deliberately forced, the paper tears while the glue seam remains intact.”

“I developed my art to the point where I blended many of my passions-wildlife, the natural world, photography, design, model making, sculpture, light and shadow and have managed to indulge all of them,” he further explained in an interview with the Daily Mail. “When I started out in the early 1980’s I didn’t see this being my job nearly 30 years later.” But here we are.

Award-winning artist and illustrator Melinda Fabian creates mesmerizing 3-D animals from paper. Her art looks incredibly realistic thanks to her talent for making details like feathers and fur.

“Melinda’s signature art features paper sculpture designs, which combine watercolor and gouache illustrations and three-dimensional hand-sculpted paper elements into one-of-a-kind art pieces. These new designs literally jump off the page, causing viewers to do a double take upon realizing they’re not just flat paintings,” we read on her website.

Fabian’s story is not all bright. She used to make watercolor art until she found out she had cancer, which made her lose motivation. However, despite not being able to continue with watercolor art, she gave new art forms a chance in an attempt to turn her attention to positive things. That’s how she discovered paper art and below are some of her works.
