Instagram is now home to countless food artists who specialize in pies, but Lauren Ko is the one who started it all. Her colorful geometric pies transformed her into one of Instagram’s most popular pie makers.

To make the whole thing even better, the mastermind behind the viral page Loko Kitchen isn’t a pastry chef or pie maker. She used to work as an executive assistant and had no background in the design or culinary world when she decided to embark on this journey.

Her decision to give pie-making a shot paid off big time. She now has over 400,000 Instagram followers under her belt, she’s made pies alongside none other than Martha Stewart, and she even published a New York Times bestseller Pieometry: Modern Tart Art and Pie Design for the Eye and the Palate.

Ko’s pies are instantly recognizable thanks to their colorful, intricate, geometrical designs. Most people believe it takes a lot of time and effort to come up with each one, but Ko’s creative process is surprisingly straightforward.

“I keep a Pinterest board of different geometric patterns… Usually, I have a general idea in my head. I don’t sketch anything out. Depending on how cooperative the dough or fruit is, it kind of evolves from there. Most of the time the finished product is improvised,” Ko told Vogue.

Jessica Leigh Clark-Bojin makes delicious pies that you might actually feel sorry to eat. When making her traditional American pastry, the self-taught artist seeks inspiration from pop-culture, both real-life celebrities and cartoons characters.

Having no prior experience in the kitchen, Clark-Bojin started backing pies for dietary reasons back in 2015. Then, to make it more fun, she cut out the shape of a dragon on top and her family was amazed, so she stuck to it, challenging herself further with each pie.

“To me, Pie Art isn’t a ‘new fad’ – it’s the uncovering of a lost art form, a way of expressing our love of food and pop culture, a way of discovering new cultures, new flavors, new techniques, of stretching ourselves creatively and intellectually, a new way of providing special dessert treats for the health-conscious, a way of meeting new weird and wonderful people, a way of bonding with the next generation and passing on our love of baking, and most of all a new way of having fun,” she shared with Bored Panda.

On November 10th, 1969 a little show called @SesameStreet hit the airwaves on PBS, and a generation of children of all races, nationalities, income levels and abilities found a voice… and a host of furry new friends! 💕 If you haven’t read up on the show’s history and the controversy surrounding ground breaking decisions (at the time) to include a diverse cast, set the show in an inner city neighborhood, and deal with real emotional challenges facing kids, do yourself a favor and check out their website. Since it’s inception the show has continued to blaze the trail for marginalized kids and has given us some of society’s most beloved characters… I grew up with Sesame Street and have such fond memories of the show’s animated segments (onetwotheefourfivesixseveneightnineteneleventwelve pinball, ladybug’s picnic, ten banana cream pies, etc.) I loved my Oscar the Grouch doll (that was my nickname as a rather serious toddler 😂) And my brother and my favorite book, which we forced my mother to read us over and over and over, was “The Monster at the End of this Book” staring Lovable Furry Old Grover. This pie is my humble homage to my favorite childhood book, and my way of saying Happy Birthday, and thank you, to the global institution that is Sesame Street. Here’s to another 50 years of life, learning, and kindness! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜 ⠀ What is your favorite Sesame Street memory? Did you have a favorite toy? A favorite episode or cartoon? A favorite character? Let me know in the comments below! And check out the big 50th bday special tonight on @hbo 😊 ⠀ ⠀ #ThisIsMyStreet #HappyBirthdaySesameStreet #sesamestreet50 #sesamestreetparty #sesamestreet #monsterpie
