]]> Knit-O-Mania is a project started by a young man from Serbia in a mission to save the planet from plastic pollution. Since the beginning of the project, this team has reused over 7500 plastic bags, which if put together would stretch to about five kilometers.

The idea is based on a symbiosis between social and ecological aspects because the plan of this project is also to include older people in it, so they can earn some extra money and help clean up our environment from plastic.   

Milos Todorovic and his grandma are the people behind this project. He is an anthropology student, and with some help from his skillful grandma, they are doing “creative recycling”. They are taking objects which would end up somewhere on the landfill or in nature, and they are giving them a new function. His grandma is a very skilled knitter, a traditional craft in the country. She learned it from her mother and she says that she uses plastic bags to knit because she wants people to understand the importance of saving nature. This project is important for both nature and society because it raises ecological awareness among people and brings improvements to the position of older people too!

]]> In the age of consumerism, we tend to throw away the old a little bit too quickly. According to some sources, the U.S. alone produces a world-leading 250 million tons a year— that’s roughly 4.4 pounds of trash per person per day. So it’s refreshing to see how some people take matters into their own hands, literally.

EnterLauren Singer. In 2012, Singer was an Environmental Studies major, when she noticed a fellow classmate would bring his lunch in a single-use plastic bag, a disposable water bottle, and a plastic takeout container. “I would sit there and think: we are supposed to be the future of this planet and here we are with our trash, messing it up,” writes Singer on her personal website.

That was when she started her zero waste journey. To Singer, zero waste means that she does not produce any garbage whatsoever. “No sending anything to landfill, no throwing anything in a trash can, nothing. However, I do recycle and I do compost,” she explains.

Now, she documents her green lifestyle in her cheeky blog, Trash is for Tossers, as well as her Instagram page and a YouTube channel, where she shares her tips and tricks. Scrolling through her social media platforms, her zero waste journey looks almost fun. And according to this NYC guru, her lifestyle is very simple and naturally, cost-effective.

When @DSW and @TOMS asked me how I make a difference in the world, I thought of talking about how we, as individuals, have power to make a positive change. Over the past 7 years, though reducing my personal waste, I have kept over 11,000 pounds of trash out of landfills and by living my values and talking about my lifestyle and as a result many more have started reducing their waste too. When I was younger, I thought that having a positive impact on the world meant trying to change everything and everyone around me. I soon realized that it only resulted in people getting frustrated with me because I wasn't accepting them for who they were, and me getting frustrated with myself because I didn't see any results from all of my efforts. It wasn't until I took a look at myself that I realized that I could change the world around me, but not through changing others, but through changing myself. So, I stopped creating trash. I am just one person, and my individual actions might seem small, but they add up and make a difference, especially when they inspire others to do the same! Secondhand shopping is my therapy, not even kidding. If I am feeling stressed or overwhelmed, walking into my favorite secondhand store in Brooklyn and going through all of the items on the racks, touching the fabrics, seeing the colors, the chaos around me, brings me calm. Even better is that I know that if I buy something "new", I am reusing something that might have otherwise found it's way into the waste stream. Almost everything I wear now is secondhand, and I have a rule, I have 99 hangers (one broke) so if I want something new, I have to sell something old. My favorite item currently is a power suit I got and wore to my first investor meeting for @packagefreeshop. I felt so proud that I was supporting reuse and that my outfit was not only cute AF, but completely values aligned. Do you buy secondhand clothing? What is your favorite item that you've scored?
