Bulgarian artist Mira Petrova has been living a sustainable lifestyle for the past couple of years. However, intending to inform people about the amount of waste we produce daily, she started a comics series titled Waste Aware Animals. The story follows various animals, including Mr. and Miss Fox, which characters are based on her and her husband.

Before she started her new lifestyle, the Sofia-based graphic designer and illustrator realized that the available information could be “truly overwhelming and rather gloomy”. That was the main reason why she took the pen and started drawing.

She explained her researches in a statement for Bored Panda as depressing. “After I would spend some time reading, I would have no willpower to live, let alone take any action whatsoever, she said and added that they wanted to give people fun and positive way to learn and share about the zero waste philosophy, free of shame and guilt.

You can find her comics on Instagram, where she has attracted over 5,000 followers, published in both Bulgarian and English.

Industrial designer Dina Amin made a stop-motion compilation video that shows how much waste we generate every time we throw something out. Amin takes old-school consumer products like phones, analog cameras, and hairdryers and films the process of taking them apart in order to show people all the parts they consist of. Through her work, we realize that when we throw away one item we’re actually throwing away many elements it consists of, including glass, metal, and plastic parts.

“On Fridays I pick a random product, I disassemble it, examine it and make a stop motion story with its parts,” Amin’s website reads. Check out the stop-motion video she created from several different stories below.

In the age of consumerism, we tend to throw away the old a little bit too quickly. According to some sources, the U.S. alone produces a world-leading 250 million tons a year— that’s roughly 4.4 pounds of trash per person per day. So it’s refreshing to see how some people take matters into their own hands, literally.

EnterLauren Singer. In 2012, Singer was an Environmental Studies major, when she noticed a fellow classmate would bring his lunch in a single-use plastic bag, a disposable water bottle, and a plastic takeout container. “I would sit there and think: we are supposed to be the future of this planet and here we are with our trash, messing it up,” writes Singer on her personal website.

That was when she started her zero waste journey. To Singer, zero waste means that she does not produce any garbage whatsoever. “No sending anything to landfill, no throwing anything in a trash can, nothing. However, I do recycle and I do compost,” she explains.

Now, she documents her green lifestyle in her cheeky blog, Trash is for Tossers, as well as her Instagram page and a YouTube channel, where she shares her tips and tricks. Scrolling through her social media platforms, her zero waste journey looks almost fun. And according to this NYC guru, her lifestyle is very simple and naturally, cost-effective.

So, will you take on the challenge?
