Artists Build Miniature Worlds For Snails

Aleia Murawski and Sam Copeland are an artistic duo from Chicago, Illinois known for creating miniature worlds for their tiny friends, snails. They build lofty city apartments, houses, bowling clubs, and casinos from random items they find on walks or driving around and they use them to tell a story.

“It is a really fun challenge for us to come up with these scenes and to find different ways to execute it so it feels believable and lived in, despite its fabrication,” Murawski told Colossal. “We are always looking for new ways to construct different elements in a scene and trying varied techniques to create depth and motion in our work.”

According to Murawski the idea for this project began when Copeland found the snails while visiting his parents.

“We made a terrarium for them…and around the same time, we started making miniature scenes together. At first, we were keeping them as pets and just loved looking at them every day. Then we realized, the sets we were making were roughly snail-sized and we loved the idea of animating these rooms,” she told in an interview for It’s Nice That.
