Carolina Gelen immigrated from Romania to the US a few years ago, and she’s fluent in several languages—including the universal language of food. This creative cook found viral fame on social media with her amazing recipes, which happen to be delicious and affordable at the same time.
Gelen describes herself as an “immigrant cook who thrifts a lot”, and she’s been living in the US since 2021 when she left her home country to pursue a career as a cook. She worked at both five-star restaurants and casual bakeries, but most people learned her name once she started sharing her recipes on Instagram and TikTok.
In addition to sharing her recipes with over a million people across several social media platforms, Gelen also started her own website and newsletter called Scraps. She’s committed to teaching people how to cook delicious food with limited resources because she knows what it’s like to be in their shoes.
“I speak 5 languages, but my favorite way to communicate is through the universal language of food. I translate food to be more approachable and accessible for the everyday cook. I didn’t grow up with a lot, so I’ve always loved thrifting and finding a good sale,” she explains on her official website.
