We’ve all seen the classic holiday Home Alone series, but we never knew just what went on behind the scenes. Daniel Stern, beloved for his role as Marv recently shared one such memorable incident involving co-star Joe Pesci and Macaulay Culkin that we likely won’t be forgetting.
The Scene
During the production of the 1990 classic Home Alone, Pesci’s character, a comically sinister burglar, attempts to intimidate Kevin McCallister, played by then-child star Macaulay Culkin. In an effort to make the moment more authentic, Pesci pretended to bite Kevin’s finger.
Unfortunately, the improvisation went a little too far when Pesci bit down hard enough to hurt Culkin. Stern, who was on set, recently recounted the moment, when he saw the shock on Pesci’s own face. It was clear the actor was surprised when he actually “bit it — like, ‘Oh… I didn’t really mean to. Joe was like, ‘Ahh, sorry I did that.’ But the only time you might see Pesci break” character, Stern recounted to The Independent.
Left With a Scar
Culkin later shared that the incident left him with a small scar, a lasting memento of his time on set. “I remember seeing Joe’s face afterward—he looked horrified! He kept saying, ‘I just bit a kid!’ It was definitely a moment I’ll never forget,” Culkin said during a past Q&A session, according to the New York Times.

More than three decades after its release, Home Alone remains an enduring staple of the holiday season. The film brilliantly balances slapstick humor with heartfelt storytelling, centering on a young boy’s ingenuity and courage as he defends his home from two bumbling burglars.
Stern attributes the movie’s timeless appeal to its universal themes of family, resilience, and holiday magic. “I think the kids love the power that that kid [Kevin] has, and the parents love seeing the kid have that power,” he said. “There’s so much heart in it. It’s so funny. You know, I think we’re really funny… and it’s got a great holiday, Christmassy feel to it. But I think the thing that really stands out is the kid getting us. Everybody wants that kid to win. It’s a kid-empowerment movie,” he explained to Yahoo!
