Floor Giebels is Mixing Embroidery with Printed Fabrics to Create Something Extraordinary

The days when people only used thread and needles when working on embroidery are long behind us, and many artists are opting for mixed techniques instead to create something unique. Floor Giebels is one of them, and her embroidery took a turn in a new direction once she decided to add printed fabrics to the mix.

Giebels is a Dutch self-taught embroidery artist based in The Netherlands. She has a background in design but decided to switch gears in 2016 when she started exploring her artistic freedom and expression through the art of embroidery.

Her creations were more traditional in the beginning, but she decided to try something new and added printer fabrics to the mix. She would start this process by making collages that she liked, then had them printed on fabric, before using embroidery to add texture.

It can take up to eight hours for Giebels to create each piece. They’re all unique in their own right and she’s constantly looking for new images and patterns she can turn into collages.

“I started on this path because I wanted to experiment and make my embroidery pieces more interesting; in some ways, this combination makes the embroidery more ‘realistic’ and some ways more abstract,” Giebels told Bored Panda.
