From “Little Women” to Google: Shreya Gupta Deserves More Hype

We first came across Shreya Gupta’s illustrations in the 150th Anniversary Illustrated Edition of Little Women, and you could say it was love at first sight. Her romanticized style of illustration has an air of whimsicality to it, but without being overly tacky. It’s the kind of illustrations that invite you to linger on inside a story, rather than force an interpretation.

According to Gupta, this particular style took time to develop. “When I first started drawing, I didn’t like my work much,” she told Graphic Competitions. “Then I realized that I need to understand why I like certain artwork and perhaps incorporate those elements in my work.”

Her recipe, as it turned out included pencil textures, limited color palette, patterns, and lines. “For some odd reason I love drawing lines and love to look at patterns of lines too,” she observes. “So I experimented with those elements and developed my current way of drawing.”

Aside from her personal work, her commercial clients include esteemed brands and publications like Google, The New York Times, and the New Republic. “One of the most important skills I learnt is to understand what the clients expectations are and at the same time keeping my aesthetic,” says Gupta.

Show her some love on Instagram.
