During Sunday’s Super Bowl broadcast, Universal Pictures unveiled a new teaser for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, with a full trailer set to drop on Wednesday. The 30-second spot opens with Hiccup and Toothless cautiously starting their friendship, before soaring into an epic scene of them flying together. However, their moment of joy is interrupted by a glimpse of the looming battle they will soon face.

Live-Action Cast

Directed by Dean DeBlois, who also helmed the original animated trilogy, the live-action film stars Mason Thames as Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III and Nico Parker as Astrid. Along with DeBlois’ return to this fantastical world, three-time Oscar-nominated producer Marc Platt (La La Land, Wicked) is also involved in the remake. According to Variety, the film was shot using Imax cameras.

The cast also includes Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick the Vast, Hiccup’s father, and Julian Dennison as Fishlegs. The film is set to release in theaters on June 13, 2025.

Synopsis

A synopsis for the How to Train Your Dragon remake published by IGN reads: “On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames; The Black Phone, For All Mankind) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast, Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society.”

Flying High

The teaser offers a glimpse into the film’s realistic flying sequences, showcasing how the iconic scenes from the animated film are being reimagined with impressive effects. The footage highlights the exhilarating and dangerous experience of flying, bringing it to life in a fresh way, as noted by ScreenRant.

While this brief clip teases the flying moments, the upcoming full trailer will likely give us a closer look at these scenes. Additionally, the new footage suggests that the trailer will also introduce more characters, such as Gobber the Belch (Frost) and Fishlegs Ingerman (Dennison), who have yet to be prominently featured.

The live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon has generated considerable anticipation, especially following the success of the animated trilogy, which earned four Academy Award nominations and grossed over $1.6 billion at the global box office.

As the release date approaches, fans can look forward to experiencing the epic adventures of Hiccup and Toothless in a new, immersive format.
