Iranian Artist Uses Cartoons to Pay Homage to Van Gogh

Van Gogh is one of the most iconic painters of all time, and many modern artists still draw inspiration from his body of work. That’s certainly the case with Alireza Karimi Moghaddam, the Iranian artist behind the viral series of illustrations titled “Fancy Van Gogh”.

Moghaddam is currently based in Portugal, where he closely works with the Art Faculty of the University of Lisbon. He has over three decades of experience in different graphic areas, but most people know him as the cartoonist behind the magical illustrations inspired by Van Gogh.

On his official website, Moghaddam explains that Van Gogh “is neither just a painter nor a genius artist but a way of life” in his eyes. He describes him as a “symbol of love, humanity and helping fellow human beings” and the main purpose of his illustration is to show that his life was all about beauty and love despite its bitter ending.

Moghaddam’s cartoons draw clear inspiration from Van Gogh’s most popular paintings, including Starry Night, Sunflowers, and Wheat Field with Cypresses. The legendary painter is shown enjoying life with a smile on his face in most of them, and that’s one of the reasons why these illustrations are impossible not to love.
