Jonathan Hateley Creates Unique Bronze Dancing Sculptures

British artist Jonathan Hateley creates unique bronze sculptures that show human figures caught in the middle of what seems to be a dance routine. Their surfaces are adorned with nature elements like leaves and blossoms, reflecting Hateley’s deep fascination with nature.

Hateley’s distinctive style originated from his wish to create a sculpture that would have a reflection of nature on its surface. Soon, those reflections became more intricate and detailed, leading him to make the nature elements a standard feature in his works.

“This has evolved over time from the shapes of leaves to fingerprints and cherry blossoms to plant cells,” the artist shared in a recent chat with Colossal.

According to Hateley’s website, his creative process is complex and detailed. After forming the initial idea as a drawing, he creates a metal frame and shapes the sculpture in clay. He then makes a mold and casts the sculpture in bronze. One sculpture usually takes around six months to be completed.

Hateley started his career as a model maker and effects specialist for TV and musicals. He decided to focus on his own practice in 2003 and has since established himself as a respected name in the art world. His sculptures are highly sought after among collectors, and every new edition quickly sells out.
