Keely Gonzalez’s Viral SpongeBob Cake Will Take You to Bikini Bottom

Many millennials grew up watching SpongeBob SquarePants, and Keely Gonzalez is no different. The founder of Pastry Shop LA came up with a creative way to take us to Bikini Bottom – creating a delicious cake that perfectly captures the essence of this beloved Nickelodeon classic.

Gonzalez is a talented baker and cake maker based in Fontana, California, and she made a name for herself with her signature shag cake. She recently celebrated the 24th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants by creating a cake inspired by this classic cartoon in her own style.

The cake references one of the show’s iconic jokes – “What’s funnier than 24? 25!” and it shows SpongeBob and Patrick laughing out loud in Mrs. Puff’s class. It’s widely believed this joke was a subtle jab at Cartoon Network since this network was on channel 24, while Nickelodeon was on channel 25 with most TV companies.

Gonzalez’s cakes also featured many more iconic references, from jellyfish to the show’s iconic flower background, and she admitted her mindset about SpongeBob changed while baking it.

“I had a SpongeBob party as a kid, I loved this show! Unfortunately, I can’t remember & quote it like most of you. So I decided to watch it while decorating the shag cake… I was annoyed and tense as h—… Who knew I’d grow up and enter my Squidward era,” she wrote on Instagram.
