Keita Morimoto’s Fascinating Oil Paintings Show Life on the Street “After Dark”

Japanese artist Keita Morimoto recently presented his newest series of oil paintings titled “After Dark”. In this fascinating series, Morimoto shows life on the streets after the sun gives way to the lights of convenience stores, street lamps, and neon signs.

One notable element of Morimoto’s works is the way he uses light from artificial sources. He successfully captures its limited scope, giving focus to subjects that are close to it and letting the dark encompass those that are not.

Another thing that makes Morimoto’s works so captivating is that the scenes and locations have a sense of familiarity to them. However, no matter how hard you try, you will not be able to find them. The artist avoids giving away any hints or includes features that could connect the places in his paintings with real-life locations.

“Overlooked corners within the blindingly bright Tokyo cityscape, local train stations with few passengers, and familiar hilltops that you swear you’ve seen before somewhere but can’t remember where,” according to Kotaro Nukaga Gallery, where “After Dark” series is currently on display.

After the run in Kotaro Nukaga Gallery, Keita Morimoto’s paintings will make their way to New York City, where they will be exhibited in The Hole. If you can’t make it there, check out more of his works on Instagram or by scrolling below.
