If you’re a fan of Lord of the Rings, chances are you’ve heard about the upcoming Amazon series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Set to come out on September 2, 2022, you might think that most fans are stoked about this news. Well, some of them are—but some are quite worried. Here’s why the upcoming series is splitting this well-respected fandom in half.

Respecting the Lore

Many of those who read the books written by J.R.R. Tolkien, and perhaps reread them countless times over, take the lore very seriously. If a movie or TV series is to be made about it, these diehard fans want it to be as accurate as possible to the original works. These fans are so connected to the brilliant and vivid world created by the author that any sidestep from the original is considered to them as blasphemous.

Letting it Go

At the same time, there are other fans who don’t care as much about the original material. As far as they’re concerned, as long as the series has the words “Lord of the Rings” in the title, they’re perfectly fine with it being a Tolkien storyline. They’re just here to enjoy the ride.

Online Forums

As one might expect, these two groups of fans have clashed quite a lot, especially in online fan forums on Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, and the like. However, once the actual show is released, perhaps there may be some resolution and common ground between these two fan groups—and more questions can be answered regarding its content.
