After years of anticipation, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power welcomed us back to Middle Earth—but did it give us the warm reception we expected? Tolkien fans had a field day on Twitter following the premiere of the first two episodes, and their thoughts are pretty divided.

After Amazon struck a deal with the Tolkien Estate years ago, they agreed to create a project that doesn’t continue the story of Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies that we all know and love. The Rings of Power takes us thousands of years back, following a group of characters, both familiar and new, as they face the re-emergence of evil in Middle Earth.

It’s believed that Amazon poured $715 million into this show so far, so expectations were running high, but can the show live up to the hype? Despite doing pretty well with the critics and receiving an 84% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score is another story. Amazon claims that 25 million people tuned in to see it in the first 24 hours, so what’s the truth?

The situation seems pretty messy, so we turned to Twitter for a more accurate—and hilarious—outlook on the situation. Some people are loving the show, others find it boring or unnecessary, but many of them are mocking either Amazon for pouring so much money into it or Tolkien’s toxic fans for review bombing the show due to its diverse cast.
