Pantone, the global authority on color matching, has unveiled “Mocha Mousse” as its Color of the Year for 2025. Described as a warm and rich brown hue, Mocha Mousse evokes comfort, indulgence, and earthy elegance, reflecting current cultural trends and global moods.
Why Mocha Mousse?
Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, stated: “Grounded in our desire for everyday pleasures, Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence,” as CNN reported. She added that the color is “sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic,” expanding the vision of browns from “modest and realistic to the luxurious and aspirational”.
Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, emphasized the color’s comforting qualities, noting that Mocha Mousse “creates a sense of harmony and warmth, resonating with the current desire for comfort and wellness”, as Kompas reported. Pantone described Mocha Mousse as “a warm rich brown hue imbued with an inherent richness that conveys the delicious quality of cocoa, chocolate, and coffee,” as CNN reported.
Warm and Comforting
According to Pantone, Mocha Mousse embodies a sense of thoughtful indulgence and provides comfort, suggesting a shift towards understated elegance and subtle sophistication in design. The color reflects a broader trend in the industry towards comfort and warmth, appealing to the desire for wellness and harmony with nature.
Mocha Mousse succeeds last year’s selection of “Peach Fuzz”, a soft peach tone that represented joy and evoked feelings of peacefulness, kindness, and community. Laurie Pressman explained that Mocha Mousse is an elegant evolution of last year’s Color of the Year, representing a natural progression from the past few years’ choices, as USA Today reported. “We have had enough happening outside of ourselves that we are seeking softer, lighter things,” Leatrice Eiseman said, as Kompas reported.
The color has already made its mark on runways, with designers like Saint Laurent and Courrèges showcasing Mocha Mousse during Fashion Week for autumn-winter 2024/2025. Vogue France predicted that brown is as chic as black and is set to dethrone it in 2025, following a trend where shades of brown dominated the runways in 2024, particularly in shows by Miu Miu, Gucci, and Saint Laurent. The color selection influences trends in fashion, beauty, and decoration, making it significant in various creative industries.
The tone Mocha Mousse aligns with the fashion industry’s obsession with the aesthetic known as “quiet luxury”, marked by muted tones and understated elegance. This trend emphasizes quality, craftsmanship, and subtle details over ostentation or excess. Mocha Mousse is seen as a versatile color that combines elegance, warmth, and a connection with nature, offering stability and comfort amid uncertainty.
Reactions on social media have been mixed, with some users expressing deep-seated hatred or confusion, even pointing out that the color bore a resemblance to feces. Others embraced the color, with user @gnomeintheknow, who identifies as a graphic designer, stating: “Personally, I love it!”
For the first time, Pantone will showcase its Color of the Year through real-world installations in major cities, including New York, Shanghai, and Mumbai. The first event kicked off in London, where the London Eye was lit up in Mocha Mousse, marked by a light show that bathed the skyline in its tones.
Pantone’s selection of Mocha Mousse as the Color of the Year signifies an evolution in the desire for comfort, moving into a more grounded dimension, reflecting a desire for wellness and harmony with nature. The color’s adaptability across different industries underscores its resonance as a symbol of comfort, luxury, and authenticity. As we move into 2025, Mocha Mousse is poised to become more than a color trend—it’s a lifestyle.
