When baseball players retire from the game, they usually turn to coaching or pursue a career in broadcasting. But Blake McFarland decided to take another path. He started exploring his creative side and is now a successful sculptor.

McFarland spent eight seasons in the pros as a pitcher, playing for the Toronto Blue Jays organization and its minor league affiliates. After he suffered a shoulder injury in 2016 and spent two years rehabbing, he decided to retire and take on a career as an artist.

McFarland creates all sorts of intriguing sculptures, with most of his inspiration coming from the nature and animal world. He uses a variety of materials, ranging from rubber tires to wood and epoxy. His sculptures have found their way into exhibition spaces across the United States, while some reside in private collections.

“I love working with new materials and always challenging myself to learn something new,“ McFarland explains on his website.

McFarland’s wood and epoxy sculptures, which usually depict animals and sea creatures, are particularly impressive thanks to his exceptional attention to detail and the way he combines the two materials. Continue scrolling to check out some of them.

You don’t need to hold a brush and a paper to consider yourself an artist. Are you creating something remarkable, that has never been seen before? Well, you are an artist, then.

You might have heard about Blake McFarland, a guy who uses junk to create his artwork. He introduces himself as a mixed materials artist, ocean enthusiast and retired ballplayer whose main goal is to create unusual art while helping our planet. In his newest project, McFarland carved scrap wood and sculpted old tires into a mini-Moai statue.

“Inspiration for this sculpture derived from the Moai statues located on Easter Island,” the artist shared on his YouTube channel. “This is the first time I have used wood as the inner-structure of a tire sculpture. I liked doing it this way because I was easily able to stable gun the tires directly to the wood.”

The mini-Moai sculpture is currently being showcased in art galleries and is listed for sale. Scroll down and check out the video below.

Blake McFarland is an artist who specializes in using recycled and strange materials. His main goal is to transform everyday items into something never seen before, all while helping the environment. McFarland says that he is a mixed materials artist, ocean enthusiast and retired ballplayer. He has already shared a couple of his creations; he transformed a spoon into a palm tree, a coffee can into a hand saw and Ramen noodles into a Toy Story character. This time, the artist “turned trash into cash”.

“This is my first Axe Restoration experiment ever,” the artist shared on his YouTube channel. “I picked up this axe for $5 at the local flea market. I wanted to make something unique, so I decided to electro-etch a design in the axe head. I then went in with a rotary tool to bore out the etch even deeper and giving it a unique roughed up effect.”

If you are interested to see how he restored his axe, check out the video below.
