Scrolling through Nathalie Lete’s Instagram page is the equivalent of love at first sight. It’s hard not to be fully enthralled with her aesthetics, which comes across anything and everything she works with. Her illustrations, textile art, and even the walls in her house are all covered in her naive artwork, both playful and charming.

Born in 1964 to a Chinese father and a German mother, and based in Paris, Lete’s work is a homage to her multicultural upbringing and is influenced by folk art. Describing her work as something between arts and craft, folk art, and native art, Lete is known for mixing different techniques and mediums, including illustration, ceramics, textile, and painting.

“I’m inspired by nature, flowers, animals, insects… and also a lot by vintage toys…” she shared in an interview with Amara. “I also love textiles, folk art… all the applied art in fact. When I was a student, I once saw a book about the Bloomsbury Group (The Bloomsbury Group was an influential group of associated English writers, intellectuals, philosophers, and artists, including Virginia Woolf & E.M. Forester) and I fell in love with this atmosphere.”

Lete admits that quarantine allowed her to further decorate her home, in accordance with her style. She describes her home as a mix between the minimalist style of her husband (an artist himself) and her more playful style. “We like wood, the furniture of the 60s and 70s along with black, gold shades,” she notes.

Her collaborations include acclaimed brands like Gucci, H&M, and Anthropologie, with her work featured on postcards, ceramic sculptures, silkscreen printed t-shirts, rugs, and even limited edition jewelry.

Artist Xuan Loc Xuan’s whimsical illustrations show a curious whale named Lucille who was born for adventure. Lucille is seen is many unusual locations as she explores the world outside of the ocean in search of a new home for her. She tries densely populated cities, forests, and many other locations that may fit her. The Vietnamese artist titled the series of illustrations The Whale Gets Stuck and it’s been a while since we’ve seen something so whimsically beautiful.

If you look closer, the colors the artist chooses to use actually tell a story of nostalgia and being homesick. Xuan told a similar story in her book printed in Italian that’s titled Babà la Balena in Città (Baba the Whale in the City). The whale is looking for a new home but actually longs for the ocean, just like many of us do once we leave the place where we were born.

We wrote about artist Albert Chamillard some time ago and he’s produced so much new work since that an update was due. Chamillard is known for his monochromatic art that has a calming effect. He uses colors, but just one at a time, playing with patterns and shadows in order to get the desired effect.

It takes him hours to finish each work. He finds the process absorbing, and if the composition isn’t right, he’s not going to finish the work. It needs to fit perfectly on a page. “When I’m drawing, I thinking about everything else in my life, and usually title them in a way that conveys that snapshot of time for me, so I can look at my older drawings and know roughly what was going on,” the artist tells This is Colossal.

Check out his work below.

When he was only five years old, Kentaro Okawara would send hand-made cards to his grandma every week after his grandfather’s passing. It was his way of cheering her up and he kept that childlike innocence years later, which can be clearly seen in his paintings. The Tokyo-based artist has a unique and refreshing style that will put a smile on your face.

“Ever since I was young, I’ve always loved making things. I’ve always drawn exactly what I want to draw. But over time, bit by bit, I got distracted by more sensible ways of thinking,” he told WePresent. He had a problem with adjusting to the ways things were “supposed” to be done, so he managed to escape that and live a life where he could create whatever he wanted.
