Great things can happen when nature and fashion come together, and Hoof & Arrow’s earrings are a case in point. The mastermind behind this brand is drawing inspiration from flora and fauna when coming up with designs for her wearable works of art.

This brand was founded by a jewelry maker named Anne, who describes herself as a bead-weaving, one-woman wonder show behind Hoof & Arrow. She enjoyed making things with her hands since her youth, and she can’t remember the time when she could sit still without a pen, needle, or spoon in her hands.

Hoof & Arrow was born out of her obsession with tiny things, and working with beads allowed her to transform the tiniest objects she could find into something beautiful and breathtaking.

“In my work, I focus on high-quality craftsmanship and contemporary designs. The reason I love working with beads specifically is because they allow for such a unique exploration of color and texture. Each pair feels like a piece of wearable art,” she explains on her official website.

Anne’s designs are often inspired by nature, and birds and flowers are two of the most common motifs in her work. She’s hoping her handwaved earrings will bring joy into people’s lives, making them feel beautiful, powerful, and effortlessly cool.

If anything, the past year has drilled down the importance of maintaining a happy, healthy environment. With most of us under lockdown, this meant bringing a bit of color and sunshine inside our homes, be it artificially or not. For many, flower bouquets have become a lock-down must. Gardening has also become a growing trend in many homes.

But for some, maintaining a small garden or even remembering to change the dirty water collected in the flower vase is too great of a hassle. For these people especially the next interior trend comes in handy. We’re talking, of course, of decorative paper flowers – made to last a lifetime.

For fashion designer/painter turned crafter, Christine Ciovarta, paper flowers are much more than a passing interior trend—they’re an artful homage to nature itself. “With every flower I make I try to capture the realistic look as good as I can,” writes Ciovarta on her website, “I feel so grateful that I can make something beautiful with my own two hands.”

A self-taught paper artist, her flowers are made of crepe paper which is painted and laminated. The process itself includes a healthy amount of research, taking note of the flowers’ shape, texture, and color before recreating them. “I study many images with them, I make sketches, mood boards and think of ways to reproduce and practice them,” explains Ciovarta. “After these steps are ready I make all the flowers, greenery, buds, and other elements necessary for my bouquet.”

The end result might at times be mistaken for a realistic flower bouquet. “My customers are always telling me stories how people always mistake my flowers with real ones, which gives me so much pride and joy,” admits the artist. Not only do they look realistic, but paper flowers also live forever, making them a sustainable way to keep your place decorated and on fleek.

With 2020 behind us, we look forward to being kinder and softer with ourselves. Our first pledge in 2021 is to surround ourselves with beauty, and Susie Ghahremani’s illustrations tap into this positive energy. An award-winning illustrator and exhibiting artist, Ghahremani describes herself as a nature lover, with flora and fauna as prominent themes throughout her work.

“Nature is always inspiring to me,” Ghahremani shared in an interview with Pikaland, “whether it’s a walk in the woods, or watching close-up as a ladybug purposefully climbs around a leaf.”

According to Ghahremani, she always feels a surge of inspiration after spending time outdoors, especially if it’s a place she’s never visited before where she can tune in and be pleasantly surprised by what she encounters.

Based in San Diego, California, where she shares a home with her husband and pets, Ghahremani is a very busy bee. The designer and illustrator behind the illustrated gift brand Boygirlparty, her brand features over 300 products, which are sold in a variety of boutiques and galleries as well as retailers such as Mod Cloth, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, and Nordstrom.

Alongside her commercial work, Ghahremani also writes and illustrates picture books. A recent favorite of ours is Growth: A Journal to Welcome Personal Change, which features whimsical illustrations of plants. Meant as a tracker of your personal growth and transformation, this guided journal offers encouragement and support along the way.

“I made this journal to help navigate change in life,” explained Ghahremani in a recent Instagram post. “By centering your intentions, goals, habits, and the creativity of telling your story, all 144 pages of this illustrated journal are intended to encourage and support.”

This is exactly the kind of positive vibe we’re aiming for this year!

Bob Landström’s art is unlike anything we’ve seen before. Using a combination of oil paint and crushed pigmented volcanic rock, he creates images that are scratched and drawn into the granulated surface. Mostly abstract, his work features symbols and iconography that echo ancient languages and religions.

Born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, Landström studied fine art by invitation at Carnegie-Mellon University and continued his fine art education at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts.

His creative background laid the foundation to his later work, but understanding the principles of volcanic rock required much trial and error.

“I just started trying it,” Landström shared in an interview with Whitehot Magazine. “For a long time, I was taking rock in different degrees of granularity and just mixing it with paint, using oil paint as the binder for it. It would go on the canvas as wet, sticky gravel.”

Over the years Landström developed and refined numerous techniques for coloring the rock and using it as a painting medium. Nowadays, he admits, it’s hard for him to imagine painting with a liquid. As the main medium of his paintings is derived from the core of our planet, Landström’s body of work is also an attempt to tap into the core of the human experience.

“I’m optimistic because, for quite a long time, I had just occasional or minimal interest in my work,” Landström notes. “But over the past few years, that’s completely turned around. I want to step on the gas pedal. What I’m really hoping is that my audience grows and I can have conversations like we’re having today and make the most honest work I can create.”

Karen Fitzgerald is fascinated by roundness, which is clear to anyone seeing her work. For the past 30 years, she has worked exclusively in the tondo form, a Renaissance term that derives from the Italian rotondo (“round”) and is used to depict a circular work of art.

According to Fitzgerald, this circular form is the right container for what she’s saying, noting that roundness is fundamental to her visual thinking. “The form is uniquely able to convey an essence of wholeness, interconnection, and metaphysical purpose,” she reflects on her website.

Her fascination with roundness is also reflected in her chosen subjects and themes. For the past 5 years, Fitzgerald’s work has often referenced the moon, explaining that the ideas that stem from it seem in-exhaustible. “The cycles this orb transits, and the myriad manifestations of its appearances embody the persistence of change, the agitation of energy that we live within,” she writes. As such, Fitzgerald’s work is dynamic and spiritual to its core.

“My work is contemporary: it utilizes aspects of the language traditions of both representational as well as abstract art,” she further relayed in an interview with Entertainment Vine. “All of my work is inspired by the natural world, and especially the subtle, often invisible energies that emanate from and comprise the world we are embedded in.”

When it comes to her style, Fitzgerald’s techniques have changed over the years. “My style is a pattern of growth that has been with me since I was sixteen,” she notes. “Over the years there were many refinements: from working with watercolor to working in oil.”

Since 2006, she’s also added a gilded touch to her work. According to Fitzgerald, paint is added on top of a gilded surface, or gilding is used within the painting. The gilding, (whether copper, silver, 23k, 21k, or 12k gold), says the artist, provides a distinctly “other-worldly” space.

The end result is both mystical and inviting. Take a closer look!

Interdisciplinary artist Lauren Elyse is known for her colorful, dynamic paintings that make a powerful impact on their viewers. Based in San Diego, California, her inspiration comes mainly from the natural world. “Nature has always been a great influence in my life,” Elyse maintained once.

“I grew up surfing, found out a few years back I had a lineage in the floral industry reaching back to my great grandfather in Holland,” she continued. According to Elyse, painting is her way of melding all the things she loves, alongside her self-discovery, into one form of expression.

Indeed, nature—and more specifically flowers—is a recurring theme throughout her work. According to Elyse, through these paintings, she aims to explore our relationship to nature, how we manipulate it to suit our ideals of beauty, and how it can be representative of our emotions.

Having trained at the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts, Elyse works in a wide range of mediums that include watercolor, acrylic, charcoal, and oil, or “any means necessary of getting out what needs to be said in the way I need to say it”, she explains.

In a post on her personal blog, she adds that for her, there’s nothing more pleasurable than a flower rendered in oils in luxurious strokes: “I like to paint my flowers in one pass rather than layered with drying time in between,” Elyse further explained her creative process. She later said that “linseed oil added for that extra gloss and movement.”

According to Elyse, using bold strokes creates a more dynamic feel to the final piece. “For me, it creates a more energetic feel when swipes of paint slide through one another, catch and meld to bring out a subtle color blend, and in the wake leaves the high relief and impression of my brush’s intentional path,” she notes. “It’s definitely trickier to prevent colors from muddling in this approach, but the reward is that of a painted flower vibrating a bit more on the canvas.”

Though this process might be messier, Elyse admits she enjoys the chaotic, purposeful energy distilled into pigment, worked through to figured petal and leaf. We enjoy it as well!

Chloe Giordano’s miniature embroideries are the essence of whimsical. Dedicated to the natural world, her embroidery subjects include woodland critters like rabbits and badgers. Those are mostly depicted surrounded by butterflies, tiny flowers, and leaves.

Employing freehand embroidery, Giordano’s technique was learned through trial and error and is a continuation of her formal training in illustration. According to Giordano, she took to sewing during the last year of her illustration degree at the University of the West of England.

Much like drawing, Giordano uses the sewing thread as a though it were a pencil. Her designs are first drawn onto the fabric with a vanishing fabric marker. Using single strands of sewing thread (either cotton or polyester), she embroiders on dyed fabrics—unbleached calico that she dyes by hand.

“I nearly always work on calico, with sewing thread rather than embroidery floss,” she further explained in an interview with Textile Artist. “My technique itself is very simple. I just layer a straight stitch over and over, working from a detailed drawing I’ve made and a few photos to reference certain areas.”

Originally from Buckinghamshire, and currently based in York, her work is sold online and has gained over the years a massive following (to date, Giordano has some 265,000 followers on Instagram). The work itself naturally takes a lot of time, with the average timespan for her animal embroideries taking around a week.

But with most of us stuck at home, she just might inspire you to take on embroidery: “I can’t think of a better way to spend a quiet day,” says Giordano.

Kelsey Ryder, the Orlando based artist of Hello Happy Plants, makes hand-molded and hand-painted cement homes for your plants. Inspired by everyday items like thank you bags, chips bags, and soda cans, she makes them into cement molds and then hand casts and hand paints them.

After working at Home Depot and hating every second of it, Ryder tried out every activity that made her happy and tried to make money from it. She soon found that she was able to make money from the plants she was growing and the planters she thrifted, and that’s when Hello Happy Plants was born. She credits her friend Francesca for teaching her how to create cement molds and changing her life, and since then she’s been making molds from anything she can find that inspires her. In addition to planters, she creates t-shirts and has been trying out new designs.

When creating new pieces the most important thing to her is “the sentimental value they hold for people. I can’t count the number of stories I’ve received or comments on my posts that I’ve read of people tagging or buying a planter for their friend that’s some sort of inside joke between them or something special that reminds them of each other,” she told the UO Blog.

You’ll want to give your plants a home in these planters. Check them out below.
