Paper quilling is a truly underrated art form, but many talented artists are trying to bring it into the modern world. Hae Kyoung Kim is one of them, and she’s using paper to celebrate the beauty of nature by crafting the most stunning flower-shaped paper sculptures.

Paper quilling is an art form that involves rolling, curling, or twisting paper to create amazing shapes, which are later glued together to create everything from greeting cards and jewelry to decorations. A wide range of tools is used to pinch the curled coils into shapes, from slotted tools and needle tools to tweezers.

Hae Kyoung Kim fell in love with this art form in 2007, and she’s been doing it for over 15 years with no signs of stopping. Since embarking on this adventure, she attracted over 40,000 followers to her Instagram page @rhodanthe1216, in addition to hosting several exhibitions in her home country of Korea and publishing her own book.

She mostly focuses on transforming paper into flowers and leaves, giving them a realistic vibe by using paper of the right color and texture. She’ll impress you with her incredible attention to detail, and her paper flowers are so carefully curled that you’ll have to look twice to realize they’re not real.

Reina Takahashi, known as reinasaur on social media, describes herself as an independent paper artist. Based in Oakland, California, she creates amazing hand-cut paper art that not only gained her a big following online, but also allowed her to collaborate with various brands, companies, and other talented artists.

Takahashi is able to create all sorts of cool things thanks to her ability to bend the paper to her will. This includes your usual geometrical shapes, animals, and food, but also objects you wouldn’t expect like syringes, outdoor scenes, geological layers, and much more.

Detailing her creative process, Takahashi revealed on her website that most of her works start as a sketch. She then proceeds to create the piece while doing all the cutting, gluing and finishing by hand.

When it comes to inspiration, Takahashi reveals she is often inspired by the details in things that surround her. However, this doesn’t mean she doesn’t deviate from the original idea when she sees fit.

“When I’m prototyping the forms and just trying things out, there’s an engagement with exploration that’s really joyful and fun,” Takahashi explains. “When there are elements of spontaneity and improvisation, I get very involved in the process.”

Anna Kruhelska’s paper art is not something you see every day. This architect, by profession, plays with angles, colors, and shapes, to create mesmerizing 3D paper works.

While making her mesmerizing paper art, Kruhelska, who is based in Lodz, Poland, uses her knowledge of space, form, and symmetry. She constructs shapes and patterns that change based on the light and the viewer’s perspective.

Thanks to their composition, which is exemplified by the use of contrasting colors, Kruhelska’s paper works give away an illusion of movement. This makes them appear like they are flowing into one another when stacked together.

According to Kruhelska, she started this practice when looking for a side project that would allow her to express herself creatively without the rules that architecture requires.

“While there are many limitations of paper, I discovered that it gives me a lot of creative freedom and possibilities,” she explains on her website. “That’s how it all began.”

Kruhelska’s technique is quite demanding, requiring her to come up with an idea, do a computer sketch, make patterns, and then actually fold the paper by hand. This can take hours, with some projects consisting up to 1,000 individual pieces. However, it is well worth it since the finished works are impressive.

Check out more of them below.

Several years ago, Scottish artist Charles Young became the talk of the internet thanks to his meticulously-crafted miniature buildings and cities made out of white paper. Now, Young decided to add some color to his works, and the results are arguably even more impressive.

Young’s new series of works is inspired by the book A Dictionary of Color Combinations written by influential Japanese painter and costume designer Sanzo Wada. In the book, Wada showcases 348 different color combinations, including four-color, three-color, and two-color pairings.

Young started crafting buildings for each of the color combinations and he has already finished four-color combos. He is currently going through three-color pairings.

The subjects of Young’s works include churches, bridges, gas stations, and more. The artist mostly relies on intuition during the creative process, choosing one main color for the bulk of the building and then figuring out how to incorporate the others in the best way.

“The whole project is like a journal or sketchbook, and not much planning goes into each piece before I start work,” he shared in a recent interview.

Young regularly updates his progress with the series by sharing the finished pieces on social media. Check out more of them below.

The floral sculptures made by artist Joey Bates look like meticulously cut-out paper shapes that have been splashed with some paint. But don’t be fooled. That splash of paint is just colored paper implanted to trick the viewers.

Bates creates his sculptures by stacking layers of paper flowers in fantastic-looking bouquets that are full of intricate details and unusual shapes. In most cases, the majority of the sculpture is created on white or black paper before blooming into “color splashes” made out of blue, pink, or gold paper.

“Each piece references a volcanic explosion or amalgamation of explosions to recall disruption, destruction, and eventual renewal,” the artist explains on his website. “The flowers lend a patina of beauty and ease to a process that is jarring, disorienting, and happening constantly — whether or not we are paying attention.”

Bates has a degree from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids. He currently lives and works in a small Swedish town Dals Langed. His works have been exhibited in galleries around the world and are part of both private and public collections. You can check more of his floral sculptures on his website and social media or by continuing to scroll.

Many paper artists are celebrating nature through their art, but no one is doing it in the way that Maude White does. Instead of relying on paper quilling or layering to craft her art, she’s creating incredibly delicate paper cutouts that manage to look simple and complex at the same time.

White hails from a family of visual storytellers and she’s been interested in art from a young age. She fell in love with paper early on because she felt it was everywhere around her and it’s been telling stories for centuries, in one form or another.

Instead of utilizing it as canvas, White decided to take her art in another direction – using her incredible attention to detail to cut tiny lines on paper with a craft knife, creating incredible, dreamy images along the way.

“With paper cutting there are so many opportunities to create negative space that tells its own story… The stark contrast between the black and white paper, and the cut nature of the work makes my art more three-dimensional than paint on canvas,” explains White on her official website.

She attracted over 60,000 followers to her Instagram page so far, and her art significantly evolved over the years. She mostly focuses on creating paper cutouts inspired by flowers, animals, and birds, and she even published a book called Brave Birds: Inspiration on the Wing.

The works of artist Richard Sweeney are all about fluidity. He manages to bend paper to create amazing paper sculptures that look like they have been caught in motion at the perfect time.

Sweeney creates the sculptures but doesn’t provide the context. Instead, he lets the viewers uncover the mystery themselves and decide what the piece represents. Most of the time, each viewer sees something different and experiences the sculpture in a unique way.

“People see different things—animal skulls and a spinal column being a few of my favorites mentioned so far,” he shared in a recent chat with Colossal.

Sweeney has a unique approach to the creative process behind his intriguing pieces. When in need of an idea, he takes long walks in the countryside to see what will capture his attention. This could be a bird, an interesting cloud formation, or even ground formations.

After finding something inspiring, he takes a photograph and makes a rough sketch of the scene. From there, he starts crafting the sculpture while letting it take shape organically.

“I don’t usually work with a particular form in mind,” Sweeney explains while adding that his pieces usually take several weeks to take their final form.

Check out more of his paper sculptures below.

Can you believe it has been 20 years since the first Harry Potter movie got out? It seems like it was yesterday when the magic world from J. K. Rowling’s books graced the big screen and made us all secretly hope that we might get an acceptance letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

In order to mark the franchise’s 20th anniversary, talented paper artist Kristy Edgar recently presented a series of paper art creations that celebrate the Harry Potter universe in a unique way. Her beautifully crafted and impressively on-point pieces have our beloved characters doing what they do best and include Harry and Ron stuck with the car on the Whomping Willows, Hermione studying, and Snape cooking up some potions.

“It’s always been a series that I’ve loved, grown up with, and hold dear to my heart, but I knew it would be a challenge,” said Edgar, who has been creating paper art for the past eight years, about the project. “In making this series, I was able to grow creatively, use new techniques and supplies that I’ve never used before, and pay homage to a magical world that defined my childhood.”

You don’t have to be a scientist to understand that color can affect the way you feel about your environment. In fact, according to color therapy, colors have the ability not only to change our mood but our overall mental health. Bright, warm colors like yellow, orange, pink and red, can help promote happiness. The brighter and lighter a color is, the more happy and optimistic it will make you feel.

But even if we don’t have to ability to change most colors in our life, at least when it comes to our virtual feed there’s no stopping us from adding a pop of happiness. Our first stop: Chloe Fleury’s Instagram page. An illustrator, prop stylist, and paper artist, Fleury understands the power of color intuitively. Her feed, indeed, her whole life, is presented through a prism of rainbow colors that will boost anyone’s energy. In fact, we dare you NOT to smile, when scrolling through her feed.

“Colors make me happy,” Fleury admitted in an interview with Refinery29. “I really love all the colors and it really depends on my mood. Some days I am more blue, some I am more pink or orange. Let’s just say I am really into neon colors lately—and turquoise!”

Another great love of hers is arts and crafts. Known specifically for her paper vignettes and three-dimensional paper sculptures, Fleury makes sure to inject bright colors throughout her work. “I’ve always loved making things with my hands,” she says. “Later, I discovered stop-motion animation, and the part I loved the most in the process of making a short movie was to create the decors and little worlds.”

Much like her careful choice of color, Fleury takes her time when it comes to choosing the right materials for each of her projects. “I’ve spent a lot of time finding the paper that I like, that is not too thick or too thin, easy to fold and curve,” she notes. “Same goes for the tools I use and the glue. It is important for me to use materials I feel comfortable with in order to be more detailed in my work. I am very meticulous.”

If you’re feeling a bit under the weather, you’d want to follow her on Instagram:
