Aniela Sobieski is a talented artist from Minnesota who paints portraits of women wearing elaborated accessories on their faces. However, these accessories are not makeup or piercings, but flowers, fruits, and even landscapes.

To understand what we mean by that, all you would have to do is check out some of her artwork. The surrealistic nature of Sobieski’s paintings is beautiful, masterful, and wonderful weird in the best of ways. It’s the kind of artwork that you can stare at for hours and still find new interesting details in them.

Sobieski says that she got the inspiration for this series from “the human impulse to self-decorate”. Her works tend to be true to that inspiration with each portrait aiming to represent the accessories as reflections of the subject wearing them.

“It is my hope that these relationships speak to the tendency for nature and the human psyche to mirror each other,” said Sobieski. Most of Sobieski’s pieces are small-scale oil paintings and could be described as a mix of classical art with a surreal and dreamy feel.

Check out more of them below.

Martine Johanna’s women portraits have a larger than life quality to them. A mixture of figurative and abstract elements, they’re colored as though they’re lit from within, using a visually stimulating prismatic palette. According to Johanna, these colors are a reference to primary impulses, the color spectrum of toys, flowers, and optimism.

“The figures are fictitious women, reconstructed models from my own photography,” explained the painter in an interview with Metal Magazine. According to Johanna, more often than not, these women tend to resemble her.

“Through them, I process my own circumstances, as they mainly are the heroines of my storylines translated from reality to imagination,” she explains.

Born and raised in Gelderland, the Netherlands, Johanna studied at ArtEZ, the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem, obtaining a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree. Since graduating, she has exhibited in multiple solo shows in the Netherlands, Europe, and the United States.

“I started out drawing and when I felt I needed color and size, I slowly switched to painting,” she reflects. “Those are my main outlets but I also love music, dancing, film, architecture, and interior design; also, clothing (in its least commercial form) fascinates me.” Indeed, her work seems to echo her love of fashion and art, in its many shapes and forms.

Johanna explains that her unique painting technique has developed autonomously and consists of a multitude of small paint strokes in unmixed colors. While her paintings seem realistic from afar, there’s a tension between reality and fantasy that lies just beneath the surface, and which becomes visible the closer you get.

The end result evokes a dreamlike state, which is both alluring and frightening: “When I work,” says Johanna, “I don’t consciously involve the spectator in my decision-making. I intuitively balance and process my own way of working, including in the storytelling aspects. So these are inherently my own types of female.”

Sella Molenaar’s Instagram tagline reads: “Celebrating the feminine, the sensual and the aesthetic,” which is in essence what her work is all about. Based in Amsterdam, Molenaar has come to be recognized for her feminine-focused illustrations. Her minimalistic work zooms in on the female body, with the aim to empower other women.

“I believe everyone deserves equal opportunities in life, regardless of their gender,” relayed Molenaar in an interview with Form over Function. “But because I think we live in a world that favors men, I think it’s important to give women a voice or stage. That’s why I enjoy celebrating female qualities, such as softness and fluidity—which play an important part in my creative process.”

As such, her illustrations aren’t restricted to one seemingly ideal body type, but rather allow for a more inclusive discussion, inviting women of all shapes and sizes to take part. Her inclusive approach hasn’t gone unnoticed, with brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Chloé, and M.A.C. amongst her selected clients.

“As my personality developed over the years, so did my drawings,” says Molenaar. “I evolved as a woman, learning and caring more about themes like sustainability and feminism. That personal shift of focus is clearly noticeable in my drawings.”

London-based painter Gill Button is renowned for her women’s portraits. Having studied at Maidstone College of Art and Kingston University London, her technique (though leaning on her classical studies) is rather loose, with her paintings providing a rather loose impression of the fashion world.

Amongst Button’s clients and collaborative efforts include brands and publications as big as BBC, Vanity Fair, The Times, and Gucci. But Button also showcases her paintings in more traditional settings, with exhibitions held in the Fashion Illustration Gallery, Less is More Projects, and Queen Elizabeth Hall, amongst other galleries.

According to Button, her success is very much tied to her online presence. “When I reflect on the exhibitions, commissions and experiences I’ve had recently, most of it tracks back to Instagram,” she shared in an interview with Metal Magazine. “It’s been a hugely important aspect of my career lately, and through it I have met so many wonderful artists and made some absolutely amazing contacts on an international level that would simply have been out of reach before social media.”

Indeed, with almost 90,000 followers on Instagram alone, Button’s portraits have struck a chord with plenty of people. “I like my subjects to have a relationship, firstly with me and then with other people,” says Button. This relationship might stem from the engaging quality her work has.

“Most of my characters are looking right at you, demanding you engage with them,” says Button. Rather than be passive, Button’s subjects demand your attention, daring you to look them straight in the eyes. “I always start with the eyes, if I’m not happy with how they are looking there is no point for me carrying on – I’ll wipe the canvas and start again!” admits the painter.

Looking at the portraits made by Marissa Oosterlee, an award-winning artist from the Netherlands, you could easily assume she is a photographer. Her works are full of details, and the subjects, mostly women, look like they are captured in a specific moment in time with a camera.

However, the truth is that Oosterlee doesn’t use a camera at all. Instead, she creates all her portraits with brushes, pencils, and an airbrush.

Oosterlee took hyperrealism art to a whole new level. She is capable of recreating every little detail and imperfection onto canvas to an astonishing level that leaves the viewers in awe.

According to Oosterlee herself, the portraits she makes are “influenced by sea and nature,” and she is looking to “create awareness of all beauty around us” and show “how important it is to be good to our planet.”

For her works, Marissa Oosterlee has received multiple awards including the national Dutch painting competition. Check out more of them below.
