]]>In Szeto’s watercolor paintings, we observe city streets, small shops, and apartments but in a more intimate way than we are usually allowed. Bored shopkeepers, unsuspecting students, and casual passersby share the world that surrounds them and allow us to pick it apart.
According to Szeto, most of the scenes and characters depicted in her works are fictional. However, she doesn’t shy away from finding some inspiration in the real world, even if it’s just the tiny details.
“When I’m out and about doing other things, such as grocery shopping, I’ll keep an eye out for interesting details, arrangements, etc. It’s more about keeping myself open to inspiration rather than seeking it out. I often find that if I go out specifically to find inspiration, it eludes me,” Szeto told Neocha in a recent interview.
Szeto shares her works on Instagram while also offering prints of her watercolor paintings through her webshop. Continue scrolling to check out more of them and get lost in all the details.

]]>Herman goes by @black_aneri on Instagram, where she describes herself as late night colorist and full-time daydreamer. The Croatian artist is now followed by over 100,000 people, but how did her journey start?
Unlike most artists, Herman didn’t enjoy drawing and painting from a young age and found it stressful and awkward during her school years. She was in her early thirties when her outlook changed after she fell in love with adult coloring books in 2015.
They helped her relax and cope with her panic and anxiety disorder, but she later decided to branch out and explore different art mediums. Watercolors quickly became her personal favorite, and she’s been using them to paint whimsical works of art ever since.
“With time I fell in love with colors and learning about art techniques. In 2018 I decided to try painting more of my own art, so now I mainly enjoy working with watercolors and making little artworks out of my hand-drawn watercolor illustrations, she explains on her Etsy page.

]]>As part of the series, Sanan creates animal watercolor paintings that hide entire landscapes in them. The shape of the animal serves as a frame in which the artist depicts the habitat that particular animal inhabits or comes in contact with.
“My works document landscapes seen through the species that inhabit them,” Sanan explains. “Some of the places I have painted are familiar and close to where I live, while in others I have found myself as a momentary visitor.”
Sanan started the A Place I Know series in 2018 with several watercolor paintings that were meant to represent the wildlife in Western Cape, the South African province he currently resides in. Since then, the series has grown to be one of his most prominent projects. It has been exhibited in various art galleries and proved popular among art collectors.
Sanan is currently engaged in several other projects, including the series Ultramarine and Kindred, but continues to create new A Place I Know artworks on a regular basis. Check out more of them below.

]]>When he wakes up, Franciose makes a cup of coffee and then takes out a piece of cotton paper and watercolors. While enjoying his morning drink, the artist fills the paper with dreamlike and surreal scenes, creating impressive small-scale paintings for his ongoing series Morning Coffee Paintings.
According to this Seattle-based artist, starting to paint shortly after he gets up allows him to get more creative. He also records the process in order to avoid “second-guessing” and trust his instincts more.
“I like to do these first thing in the morning when I am still not fully awake and start with a blank slate and no preconceived idea,” Franciose shared in a chat with Colossal.
Franciose started the series back in 2019 and has produced more than 400 artworks. Most of the time, the paintings are inspired by the artist’s mood but also feature recurring themes and characters that constantly evolve.

]]>The post The Thought-Provoking Watercolor Paintings of Valerie Patterson appeared first on https://everydaymonkey.com.
]]>“I believe that most of my ideas come through me, not from me,” Patterson reflected once in an interview with Manhattan Arts International. “Sometimes, ideas simply pop into my head seemingly from nowhere. Other times, some political or social situation will appear in my conversations, in the news, in a movie, or in many other ways—repeatedly, beckoning me to paint them.”
The daughter of a Minister and public school teacher, Patterson is also very much inspired by her upbringing, saying that both her parents modeled thoughtfulness and a belief in equality, social justice, compassion, and tolerance for others, which are qualities that can also be found throughout her work.
With degrees in Art and Education, Patterson grew up to become an art teacher, while spending most of her spare time painting. Over the years, her watercolor paintings have won awards and have been exhibited extensively throughout the United States in both group and solo exhibitions.
“Artists are often the most emotionally sensitive members of a community,” says Patterson, describing artists as the “canaries in the coal mine”, seeing and truthfully interpreting important events before others realize what’s happening.
“In a culture where so many wear rose-colored glasses, it is important that those who don’t (or can’t), sound the alarm when they see red flags,” she notes. “Because we have a powerful voice, I believe we have a responsibility to use it.”
Indeed, Patterson’s work aims to give voice to difficult social and political subjects in an attempt to encourage thought, emotion, and dialogue within the community. Depictions of children are most notable in her paintings, symbolizing vulnerability and the unfeigned soul.

]]>The post The Candid Watercolor Paintings of Yevgenia Watts appeared first on https://everydaymonkey.com.
]]>For Watts, art—and specifically watercolor painting—is also a form of language, and one she speaks fluently. Born and raised in the Ukraine, beginning at the early age of 9, she attended multiple art classes and by 1996, she graduated from the Khmelnitsky Visual Arts School. Having moved with her family to the US, she pursued an education in architecture, receiving her B.A. degree from UC Berkeley in 2007, before finding her voice through watercolor painting.
“I think my desire and appreciation of beauty comes from growing up in the former USSR,” admits Watts. “Where traditional visual arts were respected and supported. Same goes for my love of old architecture: you can’t help but learn to love it when you are surrounded by it.”
An echo of Watts’ Ukraine origins (where she studied classical and European artistic traditions), still remains in her work today. Now based in Sacramento, CA, she devotes her time to painting in watercolor and exploring different art techniques. Her artwork can be found in private and public collections around the world, from New York to Paris.
According to Watts, her inspiration is varies and includes anything from light and shadow, strong color contrasts, and a foggy landscape that perfectly reflects her mood. Show her some love by following her on Instagram.

]]>Better known as Threeleaves on the internet, Deborah developed skills in several artistic fields including graphic design, motion design, 3D modeling, frontend development, and illustration.
But alongside digital art, she enjoys working with traditional art as well. Recently, inspired by her previous work, she created a series of cosmo animals that glow in the dark by using watercolor. She explains in a post for Bored Panda that she uses a “secret ingredient” called LIT, a glow pigment created by fellow artist Stuart Semple.
“Once I’m satisfied with how my ‘normal’ painting looks, I paint over the spots that I want to glow with a mixture of pigment and super base and try to mix it as well as I can with watercolor,” she said. “It charges with natural light and will glow for up to 12 hours!”
Birds, cats, butterflies, and foxes are just some of the creatures Threeleaves has shared on her Instagram account. If you’re curious to see her work, check out the gallery below. “I followed over 900 artists that I like on Instagram, their artworks always inspired me to do more creations. Besides that, I draw things I saw in daily life, like my two cats, or something happening in society.”
