These Animal Watercolor Paintings Hide Entire Landscapes in Them

Animals and their habitats always fascinated artist Sujay Sanan and served as one of his biggest inspirations. This fascination resulted in a unique series of artworks, A Place I Know.

As part of the series, Sanan creates animal watercolor paintings that hide entire landscapes in them. The shape of the animal serves as a frame in which the artist depicts the habitat that particular animal inhabits or comes in contact with.

“My works document landscapes seen through the species that inhabit them,” Sanan explains. “Some of the places I have painted are familiar and close to where I live, while in others I have found myself as a momentary visitor.”

Sanan started the A Place I Know series in 2018 with several watercolor paintings that were meant to represent the wildlife in Western Cape, the South African province he currently resides in. Since then, the series has grown to be one of his most prominent projects. It has been exhibited in various art galleries and proved popular among art collectors.

Sanan is currently engaged in several other projects, including the series Ultramarine and Kindred, but continues to create new A Place I Know artworks on a regular basis. Check out more of them below.
