This Story of a Turtle Crossing Will Make You Want to Make a Difference

You’re never too young or too small to make a difference.

West Lafayette, Indiana, now has its very first “turtle crossing,” thanks to an 8-year-old boy.

The little town is home to many ponds and lagoons, meaning turtles often find their way near roads — and not all scenarios end pleasantly.

One such incident prompted Jack Weitbrock to make a difference.

The second-grade pupil decided to write a letter to the town’s mayor, John Dennis, requesting that turtle crossings be implemented.

“Dear Mayor Dennis,” the letter began. “There are turtles crossing the road and they need our help. Can you please put up a turtle crossing sign? Thank you.”

Not only did the mayor respond positively to Jack’s request, but he also wanted the young boy to unveil the new sign at the town meeting.

“The great thing about West Lafayette is we embrace the unique and, in some cases, the odd,” Dennis said during the presentation. “So, we felt, you know what, there’s something we can do here that’s going to be kind of cool and celebrates Jack’s initiative on making us aware of a problem.”

Jack’s mom Michelle couldn’t be more proud and neither could we.
