Watch an Octopus Solve a Complex Underwater Maze to Earn a Shrimp Feast

You probably know that octopuses are intelligent animals capable of solving complex tasks. But now, thanks to NASA engineer-turned-YouTuber Mark Rober, we have a chance to see the full scope of their wits.

Rober, who is known for doing all sorts of interesting and fun scientific experiments, recently decided to see just how intelligent octopuses are by creating a complex underwater maze for his pet octopus, Sashimi. He documented everything in a YouTube video, which quickly became viral and received 8.5 million views at the time of the writing.

The clip shows Sashimi having to navigate various obstacles in order to get to a vault that contains shrimp, her favorite food. The obstacles include revolving doors, fake walls, lever puzzles, actual mazes, and more.

As it turned out, neither of the challenges that Rober thought of was too hard for Sashimi. While the octopus took its time to explore the obstacles at times, it still navigated the maze with relative ease. Even when it arrived at the vault, it figured out how to open the door and get the reward for all of its hard work.

After Sashimi proved octopuses are really smart, and that they have skills to survive in the wild, Rober released them into the ocean.
