Artist Creates “The Queen’s Gambit” Portraits Using Chess Symbols

Anya Taylor-Joy in "The Queen's Gambit"

The Queen’s Gambit came out in 2020 and it was an immediate success. Millions of people around the world fell in love with the lead character Beth Harmon, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, and one of them felt inspired to create a series of digital portraits of her using chess symbols. His name is Charis Tsevis and he’s a graphic designer from Greece.

The Queens’ Gambit is without a doubt the hit TV series of 2020,” the artist tells My Modern Met. “A year like no other showed us many unknown and unexpected aspects of the human soul identity and behavior. We have faced the most serious and concrete challenges of our lifetimes.” He found Beth Harmon the perfect heroine for such an era.

Tsevis believes that Harmon’s life story is a perfect metaphor for life today, so it’s not surprising she inspired him to do something creative. Scroll down to see the portraits and find more of his work on his Instagram page.
