In a bold move that has Hollywood buzzing, Luca Guadagnino, known for his visually stunning and provocative films, is set to direct a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s controversial 1991 novel American Psycho. The film, announced in 2024, will feature Austin Butler in the lead role of Patrick Bateman, a wealthy Manhattan investment banker who leads a secret life as a serial killer.

Austin Butler’s New Role

Butler, who earned critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Elvis, will now tackle one of cinema’s most unsettling antiheroes. The role of Patrick Bateman was originally played by Christian Bale in Mary Harron’s 2000 adaptation, a performance widely regarded as a cult classic. According to The Guardian, Guadagnino’s version is not a remake of the 2000 film but rather a reimagining of Ellis’s novel, with a screenplay penned by Scott Z. Burns, known for his work on Contagion.

Luca Guadagnino, celebrated for films like Call Me By Your Name and Suspiria, is known for his ability to blend beauty with unease, making him an intriguing choice for this project. “We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate. Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson in a statement, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Becoming a Serious Actor

Butler’s selection marks a significant step in his transformation from teen heartthrob to serious actor. Following his standout role in Elvis, Butler has proven his versatility and depth, making him an ideal choice for the psychologically complex and morally ambiguous role of Bateman. The character’s duality—charming and suave by day, unrelentingly violent by night—presents a formidable challenge that many are eager to see Butler tackle.

American Psycho has long been a lightning rod for controversy, with its graphic depictions of violence and biting satire of 1980s materialism sparking debates since its publication. Guadagnino’s adaptation is expected to continue this tradition, with fans and critics alike speculating on how it will resonate with modern audiences. While some diehard fans of the original film are skeptical about revisiting the story, others are intrigued by what Guadagnino and Butler can bring to the table.

With production set to begin in early 2025, American Psycho is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about projects in Hollywood. As Butler steps into the shoes of one of literature’s most notorious characters, audiences are eagerly awaiting to see how this reinterpretation will leave its mark on a new generation.
