The iconic Bidwell Mansion in Chico, California, was engulfed by flames early Wednesday morning, leaving the historic structure significantly damaged. Fire crews responded to the blaze around 3:30 a.m. at the site located within Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park. Despite their efforts, the fire caused extensive destruction to the landmark, known for its pivotal role in California’s 19th-century history. ABC10 covered the event as the blaze raged on.
History of Bidwell Mansion
Built in 1868, Bidwell Mansion was the residence of John and Annie Bidwell, prominent pioneers in the development of Chico. The three-story Italianate-style home, celebrated for its ornate architecture and historical significance, has been a beloved museum and educational site since it became part of the California State Parks system in 1964.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, which remains undetermined. Early reports indicate no injuries were sustained, as the building was unoccupied at the time. Chico Fire Department Deputy Chief of Operations Chris Zinko informed USA TODAY that the department responded to a report of an illegal burn at the Bidwell Mansion. Upon arrival, the structure was already fully engulfed, preventing personnel from launching an offensive attack.
Heartbroken Community
The loss has sent shockwaves through the community and beyond. Local officials and preservationists have expressed their sadness over the incident. “This is a devastating loss for California State Parks, for the Chico community, and all who cherish the history embodied by the Bidwell Mansion. For over a century, this beloved landmark has stood as a testament to the legacy of John and Annie Bidwell and the community they helped shape. To see it so severely damaged is a profound loss that we all feel deeply,” said California State Parks director Armando Quintero in a news release reported by KRCA.
Efforts are underway to assess the structural integrity of what remains of the building. State officials are also evaluating possibilities for restoration or reconstruction, though such undertakings may face logistical and financial challenges.
The Bidwell Mansion has long been a symbol of Chico’s history, drawing visitors from across the state and beyond. Known for its role in hosting notable figures of the era, including President Rutherford B. Hayes and suffragist Susan B. Anthony, the mansion has been an educational hub for generations.
Community leaders are urging residents to come together during this time of loss. According to KRCA, a fundraising campaign to support recovery efforts is expected to launch soon. While the full impact of the fire will take time to measure, the resilience of Chico’s community remains evident.
