Canadian Couple Lives Off-Grid for the Past 14 Years in a House They Built Themselves

Living off-grid is becoming increasingly popular in recent years. The mounting challenges of modern life are prompting individuals to search for alternatives that would give them a better quality of life in a less stressful environment.

For many people, the concept of off-grid living is something they are just getting familiar with. But for Canadian couple Joel and Stephanie, this has been a reality for the past 14 years. They recently decided to share their story with the YouTube channel Exploring Alternatives, which documents alternative homes and lifestyles, and it is safe to say they had quite a journey.

Joel and Stephanie received an opportunity to build on a piece of shared land in Chesterville, Ontario, in 2008, and they decided to take full advantage of it. The two started constructing a house from scratch, using salvaged materials, wood from an old barn, and things people would give them for free.

When they finished the construction, the couple didn’t have any luxuries and had to rely on candles for light at night. Since then, they have managed to build a power system of their own using solar panels, bring clean water from the well on the property, and even get some appliances in. In the meantime, they also started growing their own food, planting veggies and fruit, raising chickens, and keeping bees.

Joel and Stephanie’s journey wasn’t easy, but they managed to prove that living off-grid and in a sustainable way is more than possible. You can check out this inspiring story in full in the video below.
