Israeli Composer Creates Music Sheets in Shape of Animals

When he creates original music scores, Israeli composer Noam Oxman isn’t just looking to produce something people will enjoy listening; he also wants them to translate into visual artworks. The result of this effort is a unique series of “music artworks” titled Sympawnies.

Being passionate about music, drawing, and animals, Oxman wanted to find a way to combine all three into a single expression. He managed to do so by composing music scores that can be drawn in the shape of dogs, cats, rabbits, and various other animals.

Oxman received formal music education at Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, where he studied music theory, composition, and jazz piano. For Sympawnies, he mostly relies on Baroque and Classical music, as they allow him the flexibility to bring his ideas to reality. Oxman is particularly influenced by 18th-century composer Johann Sebastian Bach, who was renowned for the unusual style in which he wrote his music.

The talented composer/artist regularly shares his animal-shaped music sheets on social media. Oxman also takes commissions, creating personalized music scores for pet owners. This practice also serves a good cause, as he donates at least 20 percent of each commission towards food or medical care for stray cats.
