Casey Drake Makes Pop Culture-Inspired Sidewalk Chalk Creations

Day to day life during this pandemic has been difficult and many people have come up with creative ways to spread some cheer to others to help them get through it. Florida-based self-taught artist Casey Drake is just one of them, and she’s making the streets of her neighborhood more colorful with her sidewalk chalk drawings.

Drake started creating sidewalk chalk art in April to make social distancing for her kids more tolerable. Some of her artwork is quarantine-themed like the series of 5 stages of quarantine drawings, which is inspired by Pixar’s Inside Out, while others feature Disney princesses.

The stay-at-home mom, who was previously a high school biology teacher, has no background in art, but she’s always enjoyed painting. She starts by thinking of what’s new in her life and then comes up with characters that fit the scenarios. She admitted to Bored Panda that sometimes, it doesn’t come together until she starts drawing.

She said that the pandemic changed her life and that she does these drawings to relieve stress, “[Quarantine] changed my life in similar ways to everyone else,” the artist told us. “I was lying awake at night worrying until I started doing these drawings as a stress relief. Now I lie awake at night figuring out my next drawing. These are certainly stressful times and anything we can do to lift ourselves and others up is valuable.”

Her message for her followers is to “stay safe, stay healthy, [and] stay home!”, and we couldn’t agree more with her advice!
