Crafter Creates Contemporary Embroidered Accessories

If you’ve ever thought that standing out as an embroidery artist is impossible, Carly Owens will prove you wrong. A talented embroiderer and freelance designer who creates contemporary embroideries, her work is genius.

She was first introduced to the craft in college when she went to the UK to study abroad. She was immediately hooked, and could not wait to bring the knowledge of goldwork back to the U.S., where this technique isn’t very popular.

Owens currently lives in Colorado, where she opened her studio. She describes her artworks as “inventive surfaces and dreamlike interpretations of objects, both contemporary and historical.” She considers herself a slow, meticulous worker, so when she discovered embroidery, she had an “ah-ha” moment because she had finally found a medium that suited her perfectly.

“I love that about embroidery, and I love that embroidery is so versatile. It can be done loosely or precisely, painterly or texturally, flat or dimensional. The possibilities with embroidery are really limitless,” she said in an interview for Embellished Talk.

She currently has more than 42,000 Instagram followers and welcomes commissions on Instagram or on her website. To see her unique creations, check out her profile. Which one is your favorite?
