Hans Op de Beeck’s Life-Like Gray Sculptures Look Frozen in Time

Hans Op de Beeck is a Belgian artist who puts a unique spin on traditional sculptures. He creates life-like pieces full of details, just like the sculptors of the past and contemporary artists, but distinguishes his work by giving them a gray coating.

This approach gives Op de Beeck’s sculptures an entirely different dimension. They seem like they are frozen in time, waiting for something to wake them up and bring them back to life.

According to Op de Beeck, the unique look of his sculptures was actually a coincidence. He was trying to make a concrete-like piece but struggled to get the right shade. This prompted him to experiment with various coating techniques until he discovered that sanding the coating actually produced the effect he was aiming for; “a ‘skin’ that reflects the light very tenderly”.

“In my view, it gives a special aura to the depicted, something that abstracts the figurative forms into a kind of silent world. The absence of color puts the focus on the light,” he shared in a recent interview.

Hans Op de Beeck’s works have been showcased in galleries, museums, and art festivals around the world. The artist also frequently shares his new pieces on social media. Check out some of them below.
