Ju Schnee’s Illustrations Ooze with Cool

Interdisciplinary illustrator Ju Schnee is unapologetically cool. Her illustrations – bright, playful, and nostalgic — have a neon sheen to them, reminding us of a simpler, happier time when Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were a ’90s power couple. With the ’90s making a comeback, Schnee’s graphic aesthetics is artsy while highly commercially appealing.

But when it comes to her inspiration sources, she’s equally inspired by high culture and pop culture. “I am highly inspired by surreal artists such as Ernst, Magritte or Miro,” Schnee shared in an interview with Ballpitmag. “It’s always nice to look back and realize the cleverness and finesse of these artists. I love the irony and metaphoric messages they played with and that’s also something I always try to incorporate. Also, I like to look at the current trends, like to stay up to date through art festivals or talks and go to galleries.”

Originally from Austria, Schnee studied Information Design (BA) and Communication (MA) in her hometown of Graz, before moving to Berlin where she now resides. Aside from her commercial work, she also paints murals and creates engaging animated GIFs and animations. Follow her on Instagram:
