Kaori Kurihara is Celebrating the Magic of Nature Through Her Abstract Illustrations

One of the best things about ceramic art is that you can let your imagination roam freely, even when you’re inspired by the real world. Kaori Kurihara’s art is the perfect example, and her sculptures look pretty outwardly and abstract, despite being inspired by the natural world.

Kurihara studied pottery at Seika University in Kyoto, before moving from Japan to France to study jewelry making. This was where she learned enameling techniques that she uses to this day when creating her quirky sculptures, which often take a shape of edible botanicals, taking inspiration from artichokes, pineapples, and other fruit.

On her official website, Kurihara explains that her art is mostly inspired by the plant world. She pays special attention to shapes and their geometric repetition, but there’s a reason why her creations look unlike anything you can stumble upon in the real world.

“Each element of nature seems to repeat itself but in fact, there is an infinite diversity… I have a deep desire to make concrete the fruits represented in my mind and to be able to contemplate them through my own eyes. It is in this idea that I try to create pieces that are both realistic and dreamlike,” the artist explains on her official website.
