Kim Haskins Finds Humor and Beauty in Cats Through Her Silly Illustrations

We’ve introduced you to many illustrators who see cats as their main source of inspiration, but none of them compares to Kim Haskins. She enjoys drawing cats in the most unique style, and her illustrations will help you see both humor and beauty in these curious creatures.

Haskins is a painter and illustrator based in Bedford, UK and she enjoyed art from a young age. She didn’t study art, and she actually got her degree in Hispanic studies at Queen Mary, University of London, and went on to work as a journalist before deciding to become an artist.

She always enjoyed painting and drawing in her spare time, but it was a shocker for everyone when she left her full-time job to concentrate on painting in 2009. It proved to be the right decision—she won the first competition she signed up for and found the courage to keep going after this success.

Haskins enjoys drawing cats because she finds them the most familiar, and she loves exploring their humorous side through her paintings.

“There’s a deadpan sense of humor in pretty much all the subjects of my work. Hence the manic appearance of my chickens or the vacant expression on the explosively furry cats… Humor doesn’t mean lacking in substance, I think it’s important for art to invoke emotion,” the artist told Riverside Gallery, adding she hopes her art is evoking joy.
