Meet Zeus—The Blind Owl With an Incredible Backstory and Spectacular Eyes

Owls are incredible creatures that never cease to amaze us, but there’s something that separates Zeus from the majority of other members of his species. He was completely blind when he was rescued, but that hasn’t stopped his eyes from looking like a window into another galaxy.

Zeus is a western screech owl, being raised at the Wildlife Learning Center in Sylmar, California. He was blind when he was brought to their care, after being found lying on a porch of a Southern California home in 2012.

Animal lovers at this center helped him get back on his feet, but releasing him back into the wild was no longer an option. He became a permanent member of the Wildlife Learning Center family, and they named him Zeus after the Greek god of sky and thunder.

According to WLC founder Paul Hahn, Zeus has a very calm and peaceful presence, and people usually don’t even notice him at first. Once they do, they’re always transfixed by his starry-eyed look, which often brings people to the verge of tears because it seems like he can see deep into our souls.
