The post Lucia Heffernan Gives Animals a Voice and Personality Through Her Amazing Paintings appeared first on https://everydaymonkey.com.
]]>Heffernan describes herself as a graphic designer by trade and an oil painter by design. She’s always been fascinated with animals, and she decided to explore that fascination through a series of paintings that put animals in human situations in a whimsical, theatrical, and often humorous way, allowing us to relate to them.
From chickens training yoga to dogs going on a roller-coaster, nothing is off-limits in Heffernan’s art. Her paintings have to be seen to be believed, but how do they come together? She often imagines herself in these same situations and looks for animals, objects, and different backgrounds that she can put together in Photoshop once the story makes sense.
“I am constantly aware of real-life scenes that would be preposterous in the animal kingdom. Humor is everywhere. I take funny situations and common expressions and try to twist them into creative interpretations that would be totally ridiculous in real life,” Heffernan told Forbes.

]]>Artist Alison Nicholls hopes to draw attention to some of these issues through her art and workshops. Inspired by the African landscape, Nicholls works with conservation organizations and leads “Art Safaris”, with the goal to promote awareness about conservation issues.
“Everywhere people are suffering physically, financially and mentally from the pandemic and obviously this includes many Africans who work in tourism, wildlife research or conservation,” she explains in a blog post. According to Nicholls, vital conservation work involves people rather than wildlife. “Reducing human-wildlife conflict, conducting anti-poaching patrols, or helping rural people find sustainable income-generating opportunities are all conservation activities that help people but also ensure the continued existence of endangered species,” she notes.
And then there’s Nicholls art. Focused mainly on animals, her practice includes field sketches created while on the go. Having lived in Botswana and Zimbabwe for several years, Nicholls often returns to Africa, where she finds inspiration. As part of her work, she conducts Conservation Sketching Expeditions, teaching others to follow her lead. “I use the resulting sketches and paintings to raise awareness and funds for the organizations’ field work,” she explains on her website. “These visits also inspired the creation of a growing body of conservation and environmental-themed paintings based on issues I have encountered in the field.”
Her original pieces can be bought online, through her Etsy shop, with a portion of the sales donated to African conservation organizations.

]]>Her paintings, most commonly featuring birds, pay homage to the avian creatures. The end result—bold, vibrant, and powerful—is anything but silent, calling attention to the importance these tiny winged animals have in the grand scheme of things.
Each of Velozo’s paintings features different types of birds, that provide the focal point of the piece. “Other than the realistic feature, I try not to have too much of a developed, preconceived idea of what I want the painting to look like when I begin,” relayed the artist in an interview with Artsy Shark.
Indeed, while the birds themselves are highly realistic and very much animated, the rest of the painting is fairly abstract, providing an emotional context to the final piece. Velozo explains that she, in fact, begins with these abstract backgrounds, building the piece from there.
“When beginning a new work, I create the backgrounds first,” she stressed. “They represent an abstract version of an environmental landscape in which the featured animal will be placed.” Using water and sponges, as well as collage techniques that include layering, Velozo’s intention is that the background will add movement and depth to the painting, highlighting its chosen subjects.
Take a look at some of her eye-popping pieces and be sure to follow her on Instagram for more.

]]>Having graduated from the University of Central Lancashire in 2014 with a degree in illustration, Heywood has since been wholly devoted to her online Etsy store, where she sells illustrated paper goods and homemade accessories like earrings and keychains.
“I studied Illustration and with the guidance of tutors I realized I could print my work onto products,” she recalled in an interview with the Printed blog. “I did my very first fair in my final year and opened my Etsy shop alongside it. I actually split the table with a friend because I didn’t have enough to fill a whole table! I’ve since done many fairs around the country and now have over 100 items in my Etsy store!”
Her shop also includes seasonal items, such as an adorable pair of Valentines-themed acrylic earrings that feature a cute dog dressed as Cupid. Indeed, most of Heywood’s work focuses on the animal kingdom, be it a bear-shaped enamel pin or Christmas ornaments featuring a variety of critters.
Heywood also creates custom pet portraits (which, mind you, is the perfect gift for your pet-obsessed friend). According to Heywood, her custom paintings are a mix media of ink and watercolor, painted onto a heavyweight textured watercolor paper, made to fit in most standard A4 frames and mounts.

]]>Relying on simplified geometric shapes, crisp edges, smooth curves, and bright (but considered) color palettes, Mill specializes in vector illustration, with most of her work oriented for children.
“I love the control and balance of vector work and also the warmth and uniqueness of the handmade,” she shared in an interview with Pretty Picture Club. “So I’ve been trying to get a balance between the two that feels right to me.”
“My work is a collection of tongue-in-cheek storytelling pieces, that generally feature a caricature of an animal,” she further explained. “I’m now doing more creative illustration work for clients such as primary schools and local community events, and hope to expand more into children’s illustration and mural work.”
A fan of wombats, capybaras, and giant anteaters, Mills’ illustrations, often featuring quirky looking animals, have humor and wit to them. Her diverse clientele includes Procreate, Australia Post, Crocodile Creek, and Perth Zoo, with recent projects like illustrating the Aussie Alphabet book and drawing native animals for Western Australia’s newest and largest museum, WA Museum Boola Bardip.
Her Instagram page, in short, is a colorful exploration of the animal kingdom. Take a look.

]]>Orlando is a digital illustrator based in Amsterdam. She creates gorgeous digital paintings of people, animals and nature. “I enjoy translating everyday life observations into colorful language of art,” she writes on her YouTube channel, ” My work is greatly inspired by nature; animals and plants are motives I just love exploring.”
And that is exactly what she does. Her work is full of bright, beautiful colors, and depicts scenes from the jungle as well as more urban environments. She draws panthers, tigers and huge forest trees, but also dogs, cats and potted plants. It’s so charming because it’s so natural and relaxed: The people and animals in her drawings aren’t doing anything special, they’re just going about their day, and that’s the whole beauty of it.
Orlando’s drawings can teach us a lot about nature and about ourselves. They remind us that those are not two separate things; that we used to be a part of nature, and can still be a part of it again.
