Maja Wronska is a talented Polish illustrator who gained a significant following on social media thanks to her watercolor paintings of cityscapes. Her works capture the scenes of American and European cities in a unique way, showing them lively thanks to the vibrant nature of watercolors.

Wronska recently decided to take her watercolor cityscapes to another level by animating them. Done in the form of short clips and gifs, these animations now bring her captivating scenes to life. They still have the charm of the original, with the only difference being that now cars move, traffic lights change color, and pedestrians walk.

According to Wronska, these animated works are time-consuming projects. She first needs to make the original paintings for each frame in a similar way cartoon makers do. This usually takes her up to six hours. From there, she uses Photoshop to polish the works and turn them into moving scenes.

“It takes me three hours, I think, sometimes more or less depending on how many windows I cut or how many cars and people I animate,” she explains.

You can check out Wronska’s cool new watercolor animations by visiting her social media profiles or by scrolling down to check out our favorites.

Ke Yang is a talented artist from China who finished her studies in the United States. When she was a little girl, she always wanted to hold a pencil and draw something, whether it be in her textbook or on a wall in someone’s house.

Yang was fortunate enough to have her parents’ full support when choosing her path. She was always into watching Pixar, Ghibli films, and manga. But to improve her talent, she wanted to study abroad, which made it even better when she got accepted into a prestigious university. Grateful to her teachers who she described as “incredibly talented and always generously sharing their knowledge and technique”, Yang landed her first job in Vancouver at Bron Studios for a Netflix feature animation called The Willoughbys.

“I feel so lucky that I had the opportunities to work on some of my favorite productions,” she said in an interview for VoyageLA. “Color script and set design are some of my favorite things to do! I’ve worked with clients like Laika, Netflix, and Sony to create visual art for the film.”

She explained that her inspirations come from various places, including fashion design, pottery, photography, or even “bizarre knowledge in history.”

If you’re a fan of animation—and more specifically manga—we recommend following storyboard artist and illustrator Alex Chiu. Based in LA, Chiu has had a successful career working for studios as big as Marvel Animation, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Netflix. Currently working as a Director at Warner Bros., Chiu’s love of manga and anime is present throughout her work.

But other than anime, she draws inspiration from her day-to-day. “In terms of other things that inspire me, I’d say real-life events and experiences,” she reflected once in an interview with Concept Art Empire. “Whether it be politics, the experiences I share with my friends and family, the feeling I get after I watch a good movie—stuff like that always sparks ideas for me!”

Growing up, Chiu’s creative inclination was evident. “I always doodled as a kid according to my parents,” she recalls. “But I didn’t really pick up the pencil and draw every day with the intention of getting better in some shape or form until I was 10.”

Studying illustration in school, and later in college, allowed her to think creatively and flexibly. And while it took some years before she would discover storyboarding, her studies allowed her to stretch the “storytelling muscle” through comics, illustration, and optional film projects.

“I thought I wanted to be a graphic designer, a politician [laughs in the distance], a children’s book illustrator, a visual development artist,” she admits, “until I realized that I was awful at making finished drawings, hahaha! But also that storyboarding was my favorite aspect of the animation pipeline.”

Her creations, most of which she shares online, are filled with a sense of joy and wonder. Scroll down to see some recent highlights!

Nancy Liang’s short animations and GIFs are the very meaning of mesmerizing. Pushing the boundaries of traditional 2D forms of expression, Liang’s work engages with audiences, inviting them inside her whimsical landscapes. Most of her scenes portray nighttime and include skies filled with glittering stars.

Based in Sydney, Liang’s looping animations present tales of urban landscapes, city streets, and the often forgotten places of suburbia. Having graduated with a Bachelor of Design at UNSW Art and Design in 2015—and with no formal training in animation—Liang incorporates both traditional tools like drawing, painting, and paper cutting. She also uses digital programs like Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Aero, and Processing.

“For me the animation process must be very organized and controlled,” she further explained her creative process in an interview with Brown Paper Bag. “The process is very close to that of traditional animation.”

According to Liang, she uses kraft paper cutouts that are arranged in the visual form of a diorama. “The background is usually a static handmade and/or hand-drawn piece and what I choose to move is separated into layers and placed over the background,” she explains. “I will then scan all my layers into my computer, arrange them in Photoshop, and then start to animate.”

As all of her elements are completely hand-drawn or handmade frame by frame, Liang admits her process can be very time-consuming. “The objects in my work have hundreds of layers down to the shadow under window pane,” she notes. “For me, everything must be separate. That way I can move or redraw single elements frame by frame rather than create hundreds of finished collages frame by frame. I draw, I cut, I paste, and shift things around. It is a reiterative process.”

Inspired by everyday life, she recommends aspiring artists to carry a notepad at all times. “Be constantly looking at, drawing, and noting down the movements of things,” says Liang. We highly recommend you follow her Instagram page!

Talented animator David Li has created a legitimate masterpiece. Together with Google Arts & Culture, he managed to deliver a clever interactive animation software called Blob Opera.

These “blobs” are indeed quite talented. They can sing some predefined melodies like Christmas carols, or you can get them to sing your own customized tunes if you prefer.

There are four different blobs that you can control. The purple one is a bass, the blue is a tenor, the green is a mezzo-soprano, and the red is a soprano. Together, they can sing various melodies that you compose—and you can even record them singing your music and share them with friends!

This experiment allows the machine to slowly learn and understand what opera is and try to mimic it. Four opera singers, Christian Joel, Frederick Tong, Joanna Gamble, and Olivia Doutney spent countless hours recording their singing, and yet it’s not their voices you hear—it’s the AI.

Want to try Blob Opera yourself? The app can provide some great fun for families—and your kids will especially love making their own music with these cute colorful blobs!

Legendary comic book writer Stan Lee is no longer alive, but his legacy lives on through the Marvel superheroes we adore. Millions of people love his work, and those who were lucky enough to work with him will always remember him fondly.

One of them is Aron Fromm, Lee’s former sound engineer who worked together with character designers Richard Plata and Kosmo Columbo Perry to create an animation that features a real recording of Stan Lee’s hilarious rant.

The authors titled the two-minute video Sessions with Stan. It offers an amazing insight into his mind—including Lee’s love for certain words (and not necessarily G-rated ones): “I don’t say it ’cause I don’t say dirty words,” he says. “But it seems to me that that so-called dirty word is probably the most useful word in the English language.”

“From when I was 19 years old till I was 28, I got the chance to work with Stan Lee. He was the best. This is a real recording from one of my favorite memories of the old man,” Fromm says at the beginning of the video. You can see the animation below.

He’s lived and worked in Milan, Barcelona, Berlin, and he’s currently located in Helsinki.

Zanotto started by making analog art, but recently he switched to digital, which he enjoys more. According to him, digital art is easier and quicker to produce, and the result is equally or more satisfying compared to analog art. He only finds one downside to it, and that’s staring into a screen for hours an end.

Lucas Zanotto creates hypnotizing animation loops that feature simple shapes in bold colors with a pair of eyes that give them human properties and emotions. This Italian-born artist, director, and animator creates humorous work that’s loved by nearly 100,000 people on Instagram.

You can check out his animations and some of his other work on his Instagram page and his website.
