For designer Nikolas Bentel, everyday objects shouldn’t be constrained to their primary use. He reimagines them as new products that look quirky but have a practical use.

For example, Bentel has turned a simple red electric cable into a classy bag that you can use to free up your pockets. A credit card, on the other hand, becomes a knife that cuts butter but also presents a strong commentary on the capitalist culture.

As you dive into Bentel’s portfolio a bit deeper, his creations become more amusing and unexpected. One of the most intriguing ones has to be The Pizza Bag. Designed in the shape of a pizza slice, it is perfect for those who want to have their favorite food with them at all times in case of emergency pizza craving. And best of all, it is big enough to fit a large New York City pizza slice.

According to Bentel, his products and performances aim to “engage viewers to reimagine their everyday objects” while also serving as a storytelling item.

“I make storytelling objects,” he explained in an interview with Surface Mag. “The objects can serve a function, but their main intention is to tell a story. Whether that story is about how the object was made, commentary on a current idea, or simply a physical embodiment of a joke, everything I make has a narrative.”

We’ve seen many paper artists and clay artists create truly amazing things individually, but Paola Paronetto dared to take these two art forms and blend them together. She specializes in making paper clay ceramic pieces and they’re truly the best of both worlds.

Paronetto is based in the Alpine village of Pordenone, and she’s been fascinated by clay art from a young age. She’s been honing her skills for three decades before she decided to push the boundaries of this art form, by concentrating on a brand-new technique—paper clay.

Paronetto brings her creations to life by adding some paper pulp to the ceramic mixture, creating a blend of clay and cellulose fiber. By doing so, she’s able to give her ceramics extra stability, while also creating graphic effects through irregular shapes and rough textures of paper, making sure they’re light and resistant at the same time.

On her official website, Paronetto describes her sculptures as light and melodious, adding they “evoke nature, from which they draw inspiration and offer positive emotions to the beholder: joy, serenity, and optimism.” Her sculptures often take shape of everyday objects, such as bottles and bowls, while the sculptures in her recent collection “Bosco and Pistilli” were meant to replicate trees and branches.

Technology has come a long way, and yet most of it is not advanced enough to allow everyone to seamlessly use it. The latest campaign coming from Apple demonstrates just what their products can do for people with disabilities and for anyone who needs help to get the most out of their phone and other devices.

In the campaign, we see a deaf mother getting an alert about her child crying on her watch, a performer who finds the stage door with a little help of his phone’s camera, a woman with no arms getting ready and going about her day, and more people who get to live their lives to the fullest by utilizing the options available from Apple.

“At Apple, we believe accessibility is a human right. Innovative features like Door Detection, Sound Recognition, Voice Control and more are designed to let you use your devices in ways that work best for you,” reads the video description. Besides the original version of the campaign video, Apple published another one with audio descriptions about what’s happening on the screen. See both videos below.

It’s not just you. This past year and a half have been rough on most of us, and according to statistics about four in ten adults in the US have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, up from one in ten adults who reported these symptoms from January to June 2019. But as we slowly test the water, so do we feel a surge in optimism.

“The more you feed your mind with positive thoughts, the more you can attract great things into your life,” says the cliche—and it turns out there’s actual proof to it! Research shows that people who were pessimistic had a nearly 20 percent higher risk of dying over a 30-year period than those who were optimistic.

But how to stay positive in times of adversity? One proven way is cultivating a positive environment. And with most of us being online—the term “environment” serves to include social media. We can’t stress enough how important it is to cultivate a safe space within your social media pages.

In that regard, following the right people can make all the change. Here at Every Day Monkey, we aim to serve you the most uplifting of content, so you can make some room for positivity. This week we recommend following illustrator and typography artist Taylor Weaver. An optimistic if there ever was one, Weaver’s upbeat illustrations are filled with color, texture, and an overall sense of joy. This joy also comes across her chosen messages.

“I hope that my work is uplifting, funny, and sparks fun memories in people,” said Weaver in an interview with SD Voyager. “I hope it makes them feel good.”

“I hope people look at my work and get excited about it,” she went on to say. “I hope it sparks a drive in them to create something wonderful that they love and are passionate about. I hope it is motivating to other artists and connects with people who just love to look at art too.”

Craig Black has come to be recognized for his bespoke typographic illustrations and lettering. Sprawled across walls, massive installations, or packages, Black’s work is both engaging and original, attracting an impressive clientele. His more personal projects have also been exhibited worldwide—from London and New York to Sydney and Dubai.

But oddly enough, his introduction to design and typography wasn’t as straightforward as his work would have you believe. In fact, long before he became an independent designer, the Scottish-born creative worked in a different field altogether – playing professional soccer. “When I was growing up, football was all I thought about,” he recalled in an interview with Typeroom, “but simultaneously I spent my time drawing football boots, strips, badges, etc. so without realizing, I was already working on my true passion.”

According to Black, it was only years later, that he decided on a career change and studied design at The University West of Scotland. “Thereafter, I was hooked on design and through a lot of hard work, continually challenging my abilities and not being afraid to fail has led me to where I am today,” he notes.

These days, Black’s strengths lie in his ability to cross disciplines without the restriction of a fixed personal style. This versatility has offered him the opportunity to work on a varied mix of collaborations with local and international clients of all business backgrounds. But though his clients are versatile, his work process tends to be the same, beginning with a heavy amount of research.

“I always start by thoroughly researching the brief, leading to mood boards to get the ideas flowing,” sats Black, describing his creative process. “As the mind ticks, I start to sketch a lot of ideas down and then narrow it down to more successful routes. When a concept is decided, I then take it to final stages whether thats by hand or digital depending on the specifics of the project for final completion.”

You don’t have to be an interior designer, let alone understand color theory, to realize the importance color plays on your mood. Bright colors (such as yellow and orange) act as instant mood lifters, while darker colors (like green and blue) might allow for a more calming effect.

Architecture and interior designer Dmitry Reutov understands the importance of color, which is why color is the main ingredient when it comes to his designs.

“For me, color is one of the most important, basic, and inspiring interior design components,” he relayed once in an interview with Nueve 36am. “Color is able to change any room and make it what you want and dream about.” His color choices, far from being traditional, are meant to evoke emotion. But incorporating such dramatic color palettes took some practice and experimentation.

“Thanks to my experience, my perception of color has changed throughout time and I’ve started to incorporate more and more bright colors instead of going for standard shades,” reflected Reutov.

His bold color choices stand out especially in an interior he designed for an apartment in New York. The 55-square-meter space was designed for a young couple that commissioned the architect to create a vivid and moody space. For Reutov, this meant using different hues of color to create a tropical-like environment that is very much alluring.

According to Reutov, he is inspired by nature on the one hand and ancient architecture on the other. “In addition, I am fascinated by museums, Mexico’s and Morocco’s traditional architecture, their bright colors, bamboo forests, plus Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, and its cosmic landscapes,” he noted. These inspiration sources add a distinct flavor to his interior designs, a flavor that is both appetizing and highly Instagramable.

When it comes to plastic waste, the data is alarming. Recent data shows that there is now 5.25 trillion macro and micro pieces of plastic in our ocean, weighing up to 269,000 tons. Plastic pollution also impacts wildlife health, as it is estimated that every day around 8 million pieces of plastic make their way into our oceans.

With those jarring numbers in mind, designers are on the lookout for more sustainable solutions. One solution is avoiding waste altogether by repurposing materials.

London-based designer Charlotte Kidger does just that, cleverly repurposing polyurethane foam dust by turning it into multi-colored pieces of furniture. The end result, industrial-looking and unique, makes the case for sustainable design. Oh yeah, and it’s also really cool.

“I knew early on during my BA that I wanted to work with materials in a very hands-on and experimental way,” said Kidger in an interview with Collateral. “I was always drawn to working with unconventional materials where I could push the boundaries beyond what was expected from traditional textiles.”

“I began my experience within different CMF (color, material, and finish) roles,” she notes, “this helped broaden my knowledge of how vital the role of materials are within the design industry. It was during this time that I realized I wanted to push further and work with materials in a more sustainable approach. From this, I went on to study MA Material Futures where my current project began.”

As an experimental designer, Kidger’s practice is driven by the urge to transform unwanted and valueless materials into desirable and functional objects. These objects also highlight the value that can be found in what is often perceived as waste. These days her furniture includes anything from stools to tables. Scroll down to see some recent pieces.

With the majority of us forced to remain home, our sanctuary might feel more like a prison. Whether we’re sheltering in place by necessity or staying home for our health and safety, the challenge of staying put is very much real.

However, the past year has also provided us with plenty of opportunity. With more time on our hands and spring cleaning ahead of us, now is the perfect time to upgrade our home and beat boredom all at once.

Changing our environment can also help boost our energy and benefit our mental health. Upgrades can be big or small, as we choose. A fuss-free way to refresh your home is by adding a pop of color and surrounding yourself with objects that spark joy in your life (to borrow a phrase).

Most recently we’ve fallen in love with Bride & Wolfe’s unique colored mirrors. Designed in Australia and made in small quantities in collaboration with local Melbourne makers, Bride & Wolfe understands the importance of color as a means to promote happiness.

Launched in 2005 by Miranda Moreiraby, the brand specializes in limited edition, hand-finished home pieces that pay particular attention to design and materials. Known particularly for their colored mirrors (shaped in funky, playful shapes), the range includes roller skate and rainbow shaped mirrors, all available online.

“While my main focus has always been the online shop, markets are a fantastic way to connect with my customers,” Moreiraby told Creative Women’s Circle. “I love the feedback. My customers are super cool people and often involved in creative industries; with each new product the customer base grows and evolves.”

You don’t have to be a scientist to realize that color can change our mood, sleep, and even our happiness. Have you ever walked into a bright room and somehow felt a little bit happier? Or gazed towards the blue sky and felt a sense of calm wash over you? Understanding that color plays a role in our daily lives can help us shape our reality.

Designer and illustrator Liz Harry understands color intuitively. A one-woman show, she’s known for her joyful designs and illustrations that are infused with all the colors of the rainbow.

Based in Liverpool, UK, Harry has a love for rainbows and a drawing style that feeds into her accessories design. But you don’t even have to purchase her accessories and products to enjoy her instant mood lifters. Simply scrolling through her Instagram feed would add a pop of color to your day.

With a background in the music industry, creating cover art for bands, both music and pop in general have had a huge influence over her work. But Harry also takes inspiration from her immediate environment.

“Though I do take a lot of inspo from popular culture and packaging aesthetically, I find what I’m surrounded by on the day-to-day is what feeds mostly into my work,” she told The Positive Print Company.

Working from her colorful home office, and being constantly surrounding by her three children also serves to inspire her. “So, as I’ve got 3 kids, there’s the influence of cartoons and a fun, playful side,” she notes. “But sometimes it’s just the conversations I’m having or what I’m doing in that moment that spark a thought.”

According to Harry, she started drawing when she was just a child and hasn’t stopped ever since. “During my teenage years I entered loads of drawing competitions, which kinda cemented the idea of art as a career,” she adds. Purchase her pins, accessories, cards, and illustrated gifts on her Etsy shop, and follow her on Instagram for more color.
